August 21, 2012 Weather: Partly Cloudy, High of 83 Degrees

News:
About 3,000 revelers showed up to eat in Lincoln Center’s main plaza last night dressed all in white. The “Diner En Blanc” events occur throughout the world. The location of the dinner was actually a surprise until the last minute, meaning participants had to lug tables around with them and quickly set them up when they got the word where it would be. Looked like a whole lot of fun. Thanks to Upper West Sider (and excellent travel and airlines journalist) Scott Mayerowitz for the photos above and below. See more pics at Untapped Cities.

A fifth contender plans to get in the ring for the Upper West Side City Council seat now held by Gale Brewer. Debra Cooper, a member of the Democratic state committee, said she’ll be running for the seat, which has already attracted four contenders who have raised a ton of money. “I will be a Councilmember who will not just vote the right way, but will — as I have in every position I have held – drive a progressive agenda to make our community stronger and life better for Upper West Siders.” (Politicker)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
