NINE YEARS AGO TODAY, THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND ZABAR’S FED THE UPPER WEST SIDE

Nine years ago today, the entire Northeast was cast into darkness because of a massive blackout. For some people it was frustrating, but most of the stories I’ve heard since then have been happy. The video below by Upper West Sider George Guerrero showcases one of those very happy moments. In fact, it is a scene of near biblical joy.

Here’s George’s description: “Looking to clear inventory during The Great Blackout of 2003, Zabar’s staffers took to the sidewalks in front of their famous storefront as stunned Upper West Siders wandered aimlessly home from work to awaiting darkness. Undaunted by the confusion and chaos, a passerby took advantage of the situation in an attempt to bring New Yorkers closer together as they looked to face the unknown.”

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
