Paper Source and Pippin Jewelry are both open on Columbus around 75th Street. We wrote about them here. Above is the interior of Paper Source by Kara Rota.

July 3, 2012 Weather: Mostly Sunny, High of 90 Degrees.

Notices:
We’ve updated the calendar with a correction and addition: the Empire Brewery beer tasting at the New-York Historical Society is occurring on Wednesday, not Saturday, and there will be an additional tasting on Saturday. So now you have somewhere else to drink on July 4.

The National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction is holding a benefit Races for Faces in Riverside Park on July 22. Learn more here.

News:
The city is stepping up its efforts to teach bike safety ahead of the start of the bike share program later this month. Basic rules will be written on the bikes themselves, and Transportation Alternatives is expanding its outreach. (as we reported, the Upper West Side won’t get bike share bikes until next year). Comptroller John Liu released a report Monday warning about cycling accidents and suggesting that helmets should be mandatory (they’re currently optional under NY state law). Gothamist also asked people whether helmets should be mandatory. What do you think? (MetroFocus)

No. Helmets should not be mandatory for adults. They tried that in Melbourne and no one used the bike share system. Hey, I have an idea, what if we made the streets safer so that no one ever had to wear a helmet? Now there’s a concept.
