February 14, 2012 Weather: Cloudy, High of 45 Degrees.

Notices:
Happy Valentine’s Day! Councilwoman Gale Brewer is spreading the love today by presiding over vow-renewal ceremonies: “Four couples, married for decades, will renew their marriage vows at a special Valentine’s Day celebration at 3:00 in the afternoon at the Goddard Riverside Senior Center, 593 Columbus Avenue. It’s a celebration of long-lasting relationships. One couple first said “I do” in Russian, another tied the knot on the Upper West Side a half century ago, while another couple recited their vows 60 years ago.  One couple met in 1947 in grammar school at the NYC School of the Deaf, and with the bride now blind and deaf, will sign “I love you” on each other’s hands.”

Also, Central Park is offering free e-cards today with gushy romantic photos.

News:
A fire broke out at 5 a.m. today at 42-story Trump Place at 180 Riverside Boulevard. The fire ended up injuring 11 people, including a firefighter, although all but one of the injuries was minor. One person was taken to Cornell Hospital. A man who ran through the halls creaming “fire!” may have helped save other people from more serious injuries. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Schools chancellor Dennis Walcott met with about 500 parents at PS 87 on 78th Street Monday to discuss the recent arrest of teacher’s assistant Gregory Atkins on charges of sexually abusing an 8-year-old. The parent wanted to know why Atkins had been allowed into their school after a Department of Education investigation in 2006 turned up troubling details about his relationship with another young boy. Apparently, the department didn’t include any note of the previous incident in his file when he transferred to PS 87. Some parents left very unsatisfied with Walcott’s response. Walcott pledged to review the department’s policy on hiring teacher’s aides. (NY Times and WPIX)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
