January 17, 2012 Weather: Rain, High of 47 Degrees.

Notices:
We’ve got a new list of free and cheap local events up for the week. Check it out!

News:
There’s been a surge in townhouse sales for more than $10 million in the past year. Usually, one or two sell in a given year, but last year there were four, and two more are in contract. The reason: buyers have been taking over buildings that used to house six to ten families, turning them into a single-family home and selling them to one mega-rich person. Who else is excited for our entire neighborhood to be sold off to Russian oligarchs and other insanely rich people? (Crain’s)

Sugar & Plumm Purveyors of Yumm, the candy store opening on 78th Street and Amsterdam, has toned down its plans for a Willy-Wonkaesque facade. The Landmarks Preservation Commission will take a new look at the store today. (DNAinfo)

Papasito, the controversial Mexican restaurant on Broadway and 104th Street, has pulled its liquor license application after being accused of selling to minors. (Columbia Spectator)

Patti LaBelle disagrees with a lawsuit brought by an Upper West Side couple that essentially calls her a scary diva. (NY Post)
