Landmark West is offering a special deal to West Side Rag readers. The preservation organization is having a celebration for the 75th birthday of Landmark West founder Arlene Simon at the old Calle Ocho space on January 19 from 8 to 10 p.m. For people who sign up using a special code for West Side Rag readers, they’ll take 10% off the price. General admission to the bash is $75, and $50 for students. The code is WSRAG10 if you buy your tickets through eventbrite. I’ve been to Landmark West events before and can attest to the fact that they know how to throw a party. And all the proceeds go back to the organization.
We also just heard about a special event this Sunday. “A new play, Aftermath, written by Lionelle Hamanaka of Military Families Speak Out, will have a staged reading Sunday, Jan. 8, 3:00 p.m., at the St. Paul-St. Andrew’s West End Theatre, 263 W. 86th St., in Manhattan. The presentation will be a benefit for Iraq Veterans Against the War, and donations of $10 are suggested.”
News:
The old Metro Theater space on Broadway between 99th Street and 100th Street, which has sat vacant for six years, will soon be occupied by a retail tenant. The identity of that tenant is still a mystery, but building owner Albert Bialek is confident that “It’s something that everyone in the neighborhood will love.” Is there anything that everyone on the Upper West Side loves? The Laureate on 76th and Broadway has been selling out in a hurry — 46 apartments have reportedly sold for a total $239 million since August — and broker Shlomi Reuveni is the man behind the magic. (Observer)
