LOCAL EVENTS THIS WEEK: LET THE YOUTHS ENTERTAIN YOU

In a few years, you’ll have to pay top dollar to see the students who are playing at Juilliard as they make their way into great classical orchestras and jazz groups. Or you can see them right now for free. This week through Wednesday many Juilliard students are holding their end-of-semester concerts, and you can just walk in, sit down and be entertained.

Otherwise, there are some fun holiday events coming up,and other free concerts abd events this week. Check them out below. Email us at info at westsiderag dot com to let us know about upcoming events.

Please double-check times and prices with the event producer. Many venues offer special pricing for students, seniors and members.

Monday

4 p.m. (other performances begin at 6 and 8 p.m.)
Various Juilliard Students and Faculty Give End-of-Year Performances At Paul Hall, Morse Hall, and the Rosemary Wilson Theater. FREE. (The 8 p.m. Morse Hall Concert has been canceled)

7 p.m.
Broadway Sings for Toys The Broadway Boys host the 6th Annual Broadway Sings For Toys. This will be a night of uplifting, memorable holiday music performed by your favorite Broadway stars! At Symphony Space. $40 ($25 with new unwrapped toy).

7:30 p.m.
Comfort Ye… Lauren Flanigan and stars from the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera in a concert to benefit New York Cares, The West Side Campaign Against Hunger and The Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing. The evening also features The Ebony Ecumenical Ensemble, arias, songs and holiday music! At Symphony Space. Tickets available at door with an item donation of a warm winter coat, a warm winter blanket, or a shopping bag of non-perishable items, or a $40 suggested donation.

Tuesday

Happy Hannukah!

12 p.m.
Toe-Tappin’ Tuesdays – Dixieland Jazz with the Gotham Jazzmen The Gotham Jazzmen bring you all your old favorites and more on Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, Bruno Walter Auditorium. FREE.

4 p.m. (other performances begin at 6 and 8 p.m.)
Various Juilliard Students and Faculty Give End-of-Year Performances At Paul Hall, Morse Hall and the Rosemary Wilson Theater. FREE.

6 p.m. (until 9)
Chanukah on Ice A celebration put on by Chabad of the Upper East Side, with Ice Menorha, and Kosher food. At Wollman Rink. $25 for adults, $20 per child, in person. (cheaper on-line).

8 p.m.
Artist Diploma in Performance Recital Series: Remy Yulzari, Double Bass Transcriptions of works by De Falla, Albeniz, Granados, Rodrigo, Ben-Haïm, Ravel, Ginastera, Piazzolla Rosemary and Meredith Willson Theater. FREE.

Wednesday

9 a.m.
Walk NYC Walk NYC is a program that encourages New Yorkers of all ages to get fit while enjoying the outdoors. Parks will staff locations throughout the city with trained walking instructors to lead one-hour walks. Meet at 83rd Street & Riverside Drive. FREE.

4 p.m. (another performance begins at 6 p.m.)
Various Juilliard Students and Faculty Give End-of-Year Performances At Paul Hall, Morse Hall and the Rosemary Wilson Theater. FREE.

5 p.m.
Solstice Stargazing Celebrate the first day of winter! View the night sky as guided by the Amateur Astronomers Association. Bring your own binoculars if you have them; telescopes provided. Ages 10+. At Belvedere Castle Terrace (mid-Park at 79th Street). FREE.

8:30 p.m.
Bar Trivia
Trivia Tryst was founded in NYC in 2009 by Bryce Galen after realizing that pub quizzes were fun, but there was potential for a new type of trivia night with music, energy and popular appeal! At Symphony Space’s BAR Thalia. FREE.

Thursday

2 p.m.
Winter Holiday Craft Capture the smell of the holiday season through a fun cinnamon and paper gingerbread craft. At Chess & Checkers House (mid-Park at 64th Street). FREE.

8:30 p.m.
Lost in Kino A film and music experience by composerLev ‘Ljova’ Zhurbin, featuring Romashka, Tall Tall Trees, PubliQuartet and special guests. Celebrating the upcoming release of Ljova’s newly-released CD “Lost in Kino,” built around the compilation of his many film scores, this award-winning composer brings his formidable musical and cinematic talents to the stage with the Gypsy band Romashka, the Tall Tall Trees and the PubliQuartet, along with special guests, to create a full-blown audio-visual experience of stories from the sound-side out. At the David Rubenstein Atrium. FREE.

9 p.m.
Live Jazz At Sasa’a Lounge. 105th and Columbus. FREE (no cover).

Friday

8 a.m.
Walk NYC

Saturday

2:30 p.m.
Views from the Past Tour As you promenade through the heart of Central Park, imagine yourself living in 19th-century New York City. Learn about the Park’s history and hear how its designers, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, struggled to make their vision our reality. For directions, please call 212-794-4064. Outside the Dairy Gift Shop, mid-Park at 65th Street. FREE.

10 p.m.
Festival Eucharist of Christmas Prelude music begins at 10. At the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. FREE.

Sunday

Merry Christmas!

9 a.m.
Christmas Breakfast At Trinity Lutheran Church, 164 West 100th Street. FREE.

11 a.m.
Christmas Day Eucharist At the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. FREE.

2 p.m. (and 8)
Early Music New York
Fred Renz, Director presents Medieval & Baroque Treasury. EM/NY’s chamber choir of male voices will be joined by a trio of instrumentalists to present medieval procession conducti and dances to early baroque caroles and noels. At the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. FREE.
