November 8, 2011 Weather: Sunny, High of 67 Degrees

News:
A march to support Occupy Wall Street wove through the Upper West Side yesterday from Washington Heights on its way to Zuccotti Park. It swelled to more than 700 people on its way through the neighborhood, according to a twitter feed kept by the organizers. The photo above was apparently taken in the West 60’s by @endtoendfor99.

It turns out that the 10023 zip code in the Upper West Side has the highest number of people in the top 3% of income of any zip code in the U.S. (the top 1% is not easily available via IRS data) as of 2008. The top 3% include people who make more than $200,000 a year. There are 7,621 households in 10023 making more than $200,000. (The Atlantic)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate. As a student bozo from Pittsburgh, I dated a Barnard girl who lived on 72nd and the Park. I did’t need the IRS to tell me who lived there or that they made a pile of money!!
