October 13, 2011 Weather: Scattered thunderstorms, High of 69 Degrees.

Notices:
Our calendar is filled with interesting events today, including appearances by Antonio Banderas and Wes Anderson at the Apple Store as part of the New York Film Festival.

News:
Food trucks appear to be fleeing other less hospitable parts of the city and setting up shop on the Upper West Side, community board members said last night, and it’s about time we figured out just how many of them are here. So they plan to do a survey and try to weed out trucks that are competing directly with restaurants, as well as those spewing pollution in the air. Gale Brewer, as we reported earlier, wants to track food trucks with GPS. (DNAinfo)

The city held its annual service to honor fallen firefighters at the Upper West Side’s Fireman’s Memorial. (NY1)

The New York Times got an expert to answer New Yorkers’ questions about mushrooms, including whether you can eat the ones that are growing in your planter. Supposedly, the wet weather over the past couple of months has led to an explosion in fungi growth! They linked to our story about The Magic Mushrooms of 88th Street. (NY Times)

The “best” restaurant in New York City is Per Se in the Time Warner Center. It’s also Sam Sifton’s last review. (NY Times)

Congressman Jerry Nadler, who represents most of the Upper West Side, has finally joined twitter. His first tweet yesterday was very…statesmanlike: “Happy to be on Twitter to continue the fight for jobs, equality, civil liberties, peace, and the values that make America exceptional.” Zzzzzz…That’s not why you join twitter, Congressman. Did you learn nothing from Anthony Weiner? Also, why are you not following West Side Rag, aside from the obvious reasons?

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
