The Upper West Side has relatively low abortion rates compared to the rest of the city, according to figures recently released by an anti-abortion group that is trying to get the city to do more to reduce the abortion rate.
The Chiaroscuro Foundation calculated the abortion rates for every zip code in New York. The group then plotted the data on a map that allows you to see what percentage of pregnancies ended in abortion in each neighborhood. The organization used population data estimates from 2008, and abortion data from 2009. The data all comes from city. (Abortions, Population)
The four main zip codes on the Upper West Side all were well below the city average, according to Chiaroscuro. The ratio for the entire city is 41%, which means 41% of pregnancies were aborted, not counting miscarriages. The national average as of 2005 (the most recent data cited) was 23%.
Here’s a breakdown by zipcode:
- 10023: 850 live births, 180 abortions: 17.5%
- 10024: 810 live births, 195 abortions: 19.4%
- 10025: 1,080 live births, 580 abortions: 32.4%
- 10069 (The Trump Place area): 147 births, 13 abortions: 8.13%
For the city, the highest ratios were in Chelsea and Jamaica, Queens, and the lowest ratios were on the Upper East Side and in lower Manhattan.
