There are tons of great events this weekend, including street fairs, concerts, and cultural festivals. But if you’re having trouble choosing where to go, here are two particularly unique ones.
One event near an dear to my heart is the YMCA’s Touch a Truck Day on Saturday, which acknowledges that kids often don’t want to see an elaborate puppet show or a performance every day. Sometimes they just want to Touch a Freakin’ Truck (although I question why anyone would pay $2 to touch a UPS truck. Don’t worry there ar emore exciting trucks too.). Anyway, take your kids down to 64th Street between Broadway and Central Park West today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to see what I’m talking about. $30 for a full-access wristband, $1 per ticket.
On Sunday, the Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District will hold a street fair that is unlike most street fairs in the city. Instead of the same vendors serving the same souvlaki or off-price Gap shirts, this fair (called Manhattan Valley Family Days) allows local artists and community groups to offer their own tables where you can learn karate or ceramics, and listen to music. The event will be held on Amsterdam Avenue between 106th and 110th Streets from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
