A suspected thief specializing in ripping off people watching movies at the IMAX theater on 68th Street was arrested. “Convicted serial thief Nicholas Fairclough — who has done stints in prison — was busted last month after at least twice allegedly stealing purses and electronics from patrons engrossed in The Dark Knight Rises, The Post has learned.” (NY Post)
Even as criticism has grown over laws forbidding landlords from operating hotels in residential buildings, the City Council voted to increase fines on landlords to a max of $25,000. Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilwoman Gale Brewer led the push. Critics of the law say it has convinced landlords who own buildings that house SRO’s to convert them into homeless shelters like the one on 95th Street. They can reap more money from the city by opening (shockingly lucrative) shelters because they can’t make money from renting rooms on a short-term basis. (CBS)
