Pupper West Side: Marlie’s Impossibly Long Lashes Help Her Procure Treats

    August 8, 2023 | 7:39 AM

    Marlie is a 2.5-year-old labradoodle.

After a short summertime hiatus, Pupper West Side has returned to deliver your weekly doggy dispatch. Tune in every Tuesday morning and get to know your neighborhood pups.

    By A. Campbell

Good morning! I’m Marlie, a 2.5-year-old labradoodle known around the city for my impossibly long eyelashes (*bats eyelashes rapidly) and my ombre coat. The color of my coat is actually known as “parti” – a mixture of a white base coat and spots of other colors, a pattern produced by a recessive gene. Considering my birthday is on December 31st — New Year’s Eve — it’s only fitting that I’ve become known as a “parti gal”.

Basking in the beauty of Central Park.

I live with my mom and each night, I’ll sleep in my bed until, like clockwork, around 5 a.m. each morning I’ll bark twice which is my way of asking permission to jump up with her. She always welcomes me and we’ll snooze for the next two hours before rising and heading to Central Park for off-leash hours and exercise.

Enjoying the fresh air after my morning exercise in the park.

Later on, after Mom’s gotten some work done, I’ll accompany her on errands. I tend to treat every day as if it’s Halloween, so you can find me “trick-or-treating” up and down Columbus Avenue at each of the local stores that I happen to know stashes a jar of dog treats behind the counter. Pet Market, Paper Source and of course, Benefit Brow and Lash Bar are all frequent stops.

Rawr! You can find me trick-or-treating for dog snacks in August.

I have two major weaknesses – one good and one bad. The bad weakness, is that I am prone to extreme motion sickness the minute I get inside a car. The good weakness is cheese. Or rather, dairy products of any kind. Given those two weaknesses, one of my favorite things to do is to stay close to home and sample the delicious delicacies of our neighborhood. Some of my favorite places to pick up treats include Solid State and Blue Bottle Coffee as well as a scoop of vanilla ice cream from Van Leeuwen.

Enjoying cafe life outside About Coffee.

My friendliness with other pups and people makes me well-suited to (dog-friendly) cafe life, so I enjoy spending time socializing at Black Lab Cafe or Boris & Horton, in the East Village. Keep an eye out for me in line at Solid State and Van Leeuwen and be sure to say hello!

What a joy to see the return of Pupper West Side this morning! –and to meet “parti-gal” Marlie, who deserves a special prize for cuteness and her winning personality! Lovely photos of her enjoying the fresh air and abundant flowers in Central Park, and stepping out on the town in her Halloween attire and adorable Pupper West Side kerchief! I will keep an eye out for her and hope to say hello one day soon!
Thanks as ever, Audrey, for the charming profile–and welcome back!😀👏

    So cute!

But reminder – dogs are not permitted in food places (grocery stores, cafes, restaurants) like van Leeuwen and Solid State.

Luckily we do have Black Lab Cafe for our pups.

Some people feel entitled to bring their dogs into any and all food places with their “fake service or therapy dog papers” I realize some service dogs are absolutely legit and should be deemed so but I know people take advantage of that privilege.

Please remind every food store owner. They all pretend not to notice, even the places like Trader Joe’s that have prominent signs at the entrance.

I love dogs as much or more than most people, but I wish the Rag wouldn’t normalize giving dogs human food. It’s cute to talk about dogs’ favorite treats, etc. But in many cases, it can be extremely dangerous depending on the “treat”. Anything processed definitely shouldn’t be given, and onions or garlic can be extremely dangerous. And the sugar in ice cream can wreak havoc on a little pooche’s stomach. And the portions people give their dogs is enormous compared to their size. Please stop normalizing giving human food to pets, if you truly care about their well being.
