WSR Poetry Corner: ‘Missed Chance’ (by Mildred Alpern, In Lieu of ‘August’)

August 1, 2023 | 4:35 PM
in ART, COLUMNS

86th & Broadway station. Photographs by Mildred Alpern.

Editor’s note: Our Calendar Project has experienced some technical difficulties this month — Mildred Alpern’s ode to August, which should have started the month, is currently missing. In its place, we are offering one of our favorite of her previously published poems. Mildred died this past April at the age of 91.

“Missed Chance”
By Mildred Alpern

We’re all going somewhere
And maybe our paths will cross
And maybe we’ll notice the other
And nod a quick how do
Cause maybe we knew each other
Another time and place
And maybe we forged a bond
No other could replace

But events stepped in surprising
And knocked the pin right out
We lost the other in a crowd
Of faces swirling about
And if in our hurry en route
In window blur of train
We recognize a former friend
Is tomorrow a chance again?

I just love Mildreds work. A true artist. Full package photos say it all. I look forward to reading her “moments in time” captured.

Expresses a feeling that we all have had. So immediate. I loved reading this.

I love and admire Mildred Alpern’s tender poetry, as well. Please keep it coming– it’s a wonderful tribute to her. And often a reminder about love, time, and friendship and how precious it all is.
