Thanks mostly to our readers, we have seven more restaurant reopenings to report. Such a hopeful sign! But, sadly, when we called, some owners and employees spoke of high stress and low profits, no breaks or salaries. “It’s tough,” one kept saying. “It’s tough.” Two said they were working “just to cover the rent.”
We must support our local restaurants now, so they will still be there when we can once again go out and enjoy a sit-down meal — how ever that will look in a post-pandemic world. In the meantime, the following favorites are open again — or will be in the next day or two — for takeout and/or delivery.
Gennaro Restaurant, Italian Mediterranean, 665 Amsterdam Avenue (92-93). “Please add Gennaro to the list!” emailed Helena, the owner’s daughter, who took the above photograph. “We will reopen this Wednesday, April 29th, for takeout and delivery.” The hours are 4:30 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. and there’s a full menu, plus specials and 30% off all wines. (212) 665-5348.
The Consulate, French-American, 519 Columbus Avenue (85-86.) ”We reopened last Thursday,” said Miki, the owner. He also said he fears “all the restaurants in NYC are going to disappear,” and that reopening has ”basically enabled me to pay my rent and employees.” The Consulate is open for pickup and delivery from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., every day, and offers food, wine and cocktails to go. (646) 781-9288.
Thai Market, Thai, 960 Amsterdam Avenue (107-108), will reopen on Wednesday, April 29th, at 4 p.m. for takeout and delivery. “We look forward to serving you soon,” said the message, which did not give a closing time. “Thank you for your support and business.” (212) 280-4575.
Bodrum, Mediterranean, 584 Amsterdam Avenue (88-89). “We reopened last Tuesday,” said Amanda, an assistant manager (and the photographer.) “We’re open every day from 12 p.m. till 9 p.m. for pickup and delivery. We’re so happy to be back and able to serve our guests!” (212) 799-2806.
Lenwich, “The Ultimate Sandwich,” 469 Columbus Avenue (83), reopened today, April 28th, for pickup and delivery. It is the first in the Lenwich chain to do so, said Andras, who answered the phone. Open every day, from 8 a.m. till 6 p.m. (212) 787-9368.
Kouzan, Japanese, 685 Amsterdam Avenue (93). Arthur, the manager said Kouzan reopened this week and things are “very tough…little profit…no salary.” Still, they’re hanging in, offering pickup and delivery, every day, from noon till 9 p.m. Most items are available. (212) 280-8099.
New Kam Lai, Chinese, 708 Amsterdam Avenue (94). A neighborhood staple for more than 15 years. Reopened two days ago. Open every day, from 11 a.m. till 9 p.m., PICKUP ONLY. (212) 749-8990.

Me too Josh! The Viand is my absolute fave! Hope to see them open soon!
Lenwich has really bumped their prices a lot in the last year or so but I am still a big fan and will try to support them – I don’t mind paying a little more now to help them out.

To clarify – reopened for takeout and delivery.

YEAY! Kouzan is my family’s go-to Japanese! I look forward to ordering from them.
is Gennaro still cash only?
Manhattan Valley (fka Indus Valley) is also back open for takeout and delivery — and is as delicious as ever!
Why are they opening when neither the City nor State has rescinded their stay-at-home and business closing orders? I understand the economic pain here, but safety MUST come first, and they are going to add to the problem by opening so soon.
They’re opening for takeout and delivery, not sit-down service.
Oops. My bad. I did not realize it was only takeout and delivery. Feel free to tell me to read more carefully.
Improve this very fine effort by including delivery boundaries, please.

Beyond thrilled that That Market is reopening for delivery!
Does anyone know of any Dog Groomers who work in-home or are potentially reopening?
Please, please, please go to these restaurant websites directly to order. If they use a 3rd party service… See if you can call. These services take out such a significant %.
