Two F/A-18 Hornets, supersonic military jets, will be flying over the Hudson River Friday at about 5 p.m., according to a message from NYPD.
Today at approximately 5 PM, a flight of two US Navy F/A-18 aircraft will fly over the Hudson River, north to the Tappan Zee Bridge, then fly south and near the Verrazano Bridge. The aircraft will fly between 2,500-3,000 feet.

me too. people do their jobs. they might be proud of the way they do their jobs—that’s the best thing i can think of. thankful? i just don’t get it.
i’m just curious as to what about this makes us thankful and proud. that’s not a rhetorical question.
How about proud that we have men and women who are willing to defend our country, day and night 365. Those planes are there to protect you and your city from attack. They are dangerous and difficult planes to fly, requiring a crew to keep them in the air to a standard that is greater than commercial airlines. The men and women who fly them are not paid a lot and work under difficult circumstances, sometimes they are away from the families for months at a time. Yes, Bruce we should be very proud and very grateful.

“Proud” is a word that is often misused. Where does the “pride” part of this come in?
What you say is true. And the pilots don’t pick the missions. But, it’s intrusive and unnecessary to have fighters screaming up the Hudson a few times a year. That has nothing to do with respecting or appreciating members of the armed forces. It has to do with not alarming the population of the city.
Let’s say your right and it has to be done for readiness. The least they could do is plaster it everywhere so I don’t feel ill if I missed the blurb in the WSR.
“fighters screaming up the Hudson…..” Did you happen to be outside when they flew by. I was, and I can tell you that the helicopters flying tourists all around make more noise then these fighters to.
I’ll take a little inconvenience a few times a year in the name of protection.

At least they’re telling us about it. Usually fixed wing and helicopters scream by without any notification.
David, agreed there are flyovers in the City quite often. However, there is a system for notification that you should sign up for. It’s called Notify NYC and you will receive text and/or email notifications for this type of thing. I receive these types of notices regularly.
The “why” is not important. I believe this notice is simply a courtesy so that hundreds of antsy New Yorkers don’t freak out assuming something terrible is happening.

If you pay attn. these familiarization flights have been going on over must major cities since before 9/11. But because of 9/11 nyc & DC flight have been increased, is usually a flight every two weeks or so.
I’ll send them in to WSR when we get ’em, and can realse at 26 Federal

Duly noted and observed at approximately 1700hrs Friday a two ship formation of F 18 hornets flying south…
And by the way, not for nothing, it costs roughly $11,000/hr to fly one of these things. Also, jet fuel has a very short shelf-life. Better to use it up than see it go to waste, right?
