LARGE HUDSON RIVER VESSEL WAS APPARENTLY FIXING A CABLE

The Ariadne near 97th Street this weekend.

A large vessel that was parked at various spots in the Hudson for several days this month was apparently working on an electrical cable under the river, according to a site that tracks ships in the river.

The Ariadne, an offshore support vessel, was working on a subsea electrical cable, according to the Tugster blog. A site called vesselfinder that tracks the position of ships showed the vessel mvoing around the Hudson over the past week or so, sometimes at 68th Street sometimes farther North. Vesselfinder showed Ariadne back at a New Jersey dock as of Wednesday morning.

Ships were also seen earlier this year repairing an underwater cable in the Hudson.

Were they fixing the cable with Ariadne’s needle?

I wouldn’t be surprise if there were a connection with the name. The Ariadne was helping to “thread” a cable under the river bed and into a conduit starting at Pier 92 and heading east on 52nd Street. This was tried two years ago–it backed up traffic on 12th Ave.– and it failed. They’ve been working on it again for the past month and a half. It’s a mess, but it’s a great idea to bring in electricity from that state on the other side of the Hudson River. I hope it ends soon because the construction zone cuts right through the path that my dog and I go through on our walks.

the vesselfinder site is pretty cool. it says that this yacht, https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/industry/9124404/Largest-British-built-private-yacht-sets-sail-for-Caribbean.html, was off 86th Street on Wednesday.

Thanks! I was wondering what this was. I took a picture and was going to send it your way but wasn’t bothered. Nice to have this cleared up – thank you!

I see vessels like that parked in the Hudson quite frequently through my apartment window.
