Three people were arrested last week in what police say was an attempted robbery of a cab driver. They got into the cab at around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday at 69th Street and Broadway and asked to be taken to 73rd Street and Amsterdam, police said.
Once they got to 73rd and Columbus, two of them hopped out while the third reached through the plexi-glass and attempted to take money out of the driver’s shirt pocket. The driver was able to fend the robber off, and police arrested all three — a 22-year-old woman, a 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, the NYPD spokesperson said. It was a pretty large response. See the video by our tipster below.
Credit to the police.
I will stop here, before critiques of the Mayor begin.
This sort of thing never happened before DeBlasio became mayor.
Mark, you are so right. Under Giuliani, cabbies got shot and killed for their money! None of this pansy “grab-and-run” robbery under DeBlasio.
/sarcasm
Do cabbies have some way of auto calling 911? That was a fast response time. I wonder if he was suspicious when they asked to be taken only 4 blocks from the pickup.
Once upon a time, in those (pre-?) Giuliani days when cabs were being held up left right and sideways, I had thought there was a program of installing round yellow lights on the back of each cab that would allow the driver to quietly signal a need for immediate help.
Still there? Don’t know.
Cat, cab drivers have a switch beneath their steering wheel, which connects to a circular yellow “reflective-like disk” on the back end of their car. The disk, when lit, is meant to alert outsiders/Police know that the driver needs assistance.
This yellow disk is usually next to the trunk handle or above the bumper.

I like the tiny NYPD Smart Car.
Facts here don’t show robbery (force or threat of force) but grand larceny (taking from the person, i.e., his pocket).
A robbery, shooting and vandalism in an area immune from this since the late 80 s warly 90’s go figure all in one week. Like Hillary said safer then ever, lol.
seriously? you believe that the UWS has been “immune” from robberies and shootings since the late 80s / early 90s?
of course crime on the UWS is LOWER now than it was in the Giuliani era. but let’s not let facts get in the way of liberal-hating anger.
If they started at 69th and Broadway and asked to be taken to 73rd and Amsterdam, then what were they doing on 73rd and Columbus, a block east of either route (up Bway or up Amsterdam) they would have been following?
Not to knock the cabbie, but when 3 hoodlum-looking teens (they look like teens) get into your cab, and ask to be driven 4 blocks, your “crap is going down” antenna should be up and you probably should rethink accepting them as passengers.
