I’ve only put the October 19 meeting on my calendar. I expect that with all the discussion and revision that has already taken place, concensus has been reached.
Dannyboy – I think you are right (at least I hope you are). This has been going on long enough that a final proposal should be ready to present at this point.
Oh, goody: the NYC Department of Education will hold public hearings on the proposed school rezoning issue !
Uh-oh…isn’t the re-zoning about schools and people between W.59th and W.70th ??
Then WHY are 4 of the 5 hearings being held in the MID-W.90’s…EXCEPT FOR ONE…even further, at W.121st??
Possible reasons:
1. Because the D.o.E. DOESN’T CARE A LICK ABOUT THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE RE-ZONING;
2. Because this is a DELIBERATE AND CYNICAL MOVE TO RESTRICT COMMENT;
3. Because the D.o.E. is run by a collection of moronic bureaucrats with the collective I.Q. of a frog.
4. ALL OF THE ABOVE !!
It takes me 10 minutes subway + 5 minutes brisk walk to get to MSC from 72nd.
With Lyft Line, Uber pool and going home with a friend, I can get back from the 90s for $3.
The northern locations are more than 15 minutes away, but over the years, I’ve become a connoisseur of school buildings all over the UWS. FDA is a beautiful old building, for example, and I’ve been impressed by the condition of the schools everywhere in the District. The janitors do a great job, and it’s also nice to see older kids coming and going playing basketball and using the gym at some of the schools in the evenings.
ScooterStan is right. The meeting should be held in a location convenient to the people who are primarily effected by the re-zoning, that is, the people below 72nd Street.
The answer is 4. All of the Above.
How are they “primarily effected”? Other families in other school zones will also be rezoned.
In order to schedule these meetings, they need to first find a night that is available for all members of the board plus the DOE reps. Then they have to make sure it isn’t a holiday that any established religion observes or a federal holiday. Once they have picked those dates, they need to find schools where the auditorium isn’t already spoken for. This is not easy logistically.
Plus, as others have noted, the West 90s happen to be the exact center of the district. As noted in other threads, the schools at the lower end of the district are not the only ones with a stake in this.
So please stop with the conspiracy theories and do something productive with your time – raise money for a school; read to a child; or whatever else.

No, the rezoning is not just for 59th to 70th Streets. The ps 199 parents and very vocal but they are not more important than parents all over the district who may be impacted. The more recent proposal changed the lines for all the schools in their district.

But aren’t the locations in the heart of the district?
Folks – The CEC has been quite vocal that all voices in the District are not being heard. In addition to the fact that the CEC has to find available facilities, this may also be an effort to engage those communities that have not been engaged so far.
Let’s not go all conspiracy theory on everything relating to this issue….
The locations are in the heart of the district. What you haven’t considered is that the PS 199 parents are more important than other parents. Their time is more valuable. They shouldn’t be expected to take a subway or bus like to the meetings like other parents.
This is the same attitude that give us the issues with intermixing kids previously zoned for 199 with those from 191.
I think Sharon’s point is 199 parents are very involved in this issue and their involvement, perhaps, contributes the the DOE’s decision to hold the hearings in a location that is inconvenient for 199 parents.
I don’t think Sharon’s point was 199 parents are “more important” than 191 parents. You anon (if that is really your name)seem to have projected your own fears onto Sharon’s statement.
As has been pointed out above, all the elementary schools in D3 are potentially impacted. The most reasonable meeting place would be in the center of the district.
I honestly don’t see what is so difficult for the PS 199 parents to go 20 or 30 blocks to attend a meeting.
