    MONDAY: MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY IN RIVERSIDE PARK WILL HONOR FAMOUS ADMIRAL

    The annual Memorial Day ceremony will take place on Monday starting at 10 a.m. in Riverside Park at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument at 89th street, with a special commemoration for the 50th anniversary of the death of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of the Allied Naval Forces in the Pacific during World War II.

    The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Association cordially invites everyone to attend this year’s annual Memorial Day observance at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument.

    This year’s program commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the death of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz.

    In conjunction with New York Fleet Week, active duty Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will also participate.

    at 10:00 am, the United States Navy Band will perform a musical prelude. The Procession sets off at 10:30 am, led by the New York Scottish Pipes and Drums, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in period uniforms, and the Veteran Corps of Artillery.

    During the solemn ceremony, 23 veterans, heritage and patriotic organizations will lay wreaths at the Monument, including American Legion, Navy League, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the Revolution, Jewish War Veterans, and Montford Point Marines.

    Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus will speak and lay a wreath at the portal of the historic monument. Other guest speakers paying tribute will be: TV lifestyle expert and author, Sandra Lee, and Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer.  Rear Admiral Jack Scorby, Jr., USN Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Norfolk will deliver the keynote Memorial address.
