News:
Upper West Side City Council Member Gale Brewer says in a letter to Police Commish Ray Kelly that she was mistreated by the NYPD while she was at the Gay Pride parade this summer. An officer penned her in behind a barricade when she attempted to join her fellow council members before the parade and he also shoved an African-American woman who approached the barricade. A sergeant then came over and gave Brewer a special salute — the one that means “go fuck yourself”, and he and the officer laughed at her. After 90 minutes, and a flurry of phone calls, Brewer was released. This comes after the NYPD detained a Brooklyn Councilman at the West Indian parade on suspicion of who-knows-what. Hey, at least she wasn’t pepper-sprayed at point-blank range! (Village Voice)

Spices and Tease at 97th Street and Broadway that we told you about a couple of months ago is finally open. And from the looks of it, I bet it smells good in there. (NY Times)

Melissa over at Out Walking the Dog can tell fall is here. Check out her sweet photo essay of the changes in the neighborhood. (Out Walking the Dog)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
