Bareburger at 795 Columbus Avenue.
Bareburger in Columbus Square and a bar at the NYLO hotel on 77th street will go before the community board on Wednesday night to try to get approved for liquor licenses. And several other restaurants and cafes are hoping to win approval to open sidewalk cafes. Most of the sidewalk cafe applications, aside from Senn Thai, are for renewals.
The meeting takes place at 250 West 87th street at 7 p.m. The agenda is below:

With the burgeoning trade in sidewalk cafes, can the pedestrians among us get a pedestrian lane, much like the bicycle riders are getting bicycle lanes?
Could use a pedestrian “lane” on Amsterdam Avenue, 80-83rd Street – when the sidewalk tables/chairs are out, it is necessary to “wait on line” to walk on the sidewalk.
This comes up everywhere the sidewalks have been over-narrowed to accommodate drivers who are zipping out of the neighborhood. Think back to the CB meeting where a driver asked to keep Amsterdam over-engineered so they could drive away SIX seconds faster, or the paranoid fear that bicyclists can’t have one bike lane in case the city needs to be evacuated by car after a climate-related emergency, and you see what the tradeoffs are.
You will be able to use the bike lane that no one will be using.

I do not see the appeal of a sidewalk cafe on the UWS. The view is of Columbus, Broadway, or Amsterdam Ave with cars idling in traffic (because of the bike lanes). Yum! carbon monoxide with your gnocchi and Sauvignon Blanc anyone?
Seriously? Sitting outdoors in summer or fall is great. Yeesh. So much grumpiness.
This is great! So many new sidewalk cafes for people to bring their dogs along while they eat. Studies have shown dogs would rather lie on a sidewalk and watch humans eat than play or walk in the park. Win-win all around.

I grew up here and don’t recall Amsterdam sidewalks being narrowed but perhaps that was before my time…when do you remember this happening?
Unfortunately, it is the ever increasing luxury development that generates so much vehicle traffic.
For example, in the narrow streets in the Wall Street area, there was hardly any traffic as recently as 6 years ago. But due to the Bloomberg initiated land use policies, small buildings have been torn down and replaced by big luxury buildings and hotels. So now delivery vehicles, Uber etc throughout narrow streets of Nassau, William, Ann etc.
You’re right, I’m only guessing that the sidewalk was narrowed to increase space for motor traffic at the expense of pedestrians, because it gets so constricted there.
There’s a famous set of before-and-after photos on Lexington Ave that show the effect over on the east side. Maybe other West Side Rag readers know when/if changes hit Amsterdam. I don’t know.
What “burgeoning trade”? With the exception of Senn Thai, all of the sidewalk cafe permit applications are for renewals of already existing sidewalk cafes.
I prefer courtyard seating to sidewalk cafès. It’s nice every once in a while when the place is perfect, but things did get a little carried away when whole blocks became cafeterias. Paris is one thing, but dessert next to rush hour traffic and truck deliveries isn’t exactly romantic.
They are dogs for heavens sake. We humans enjoy eating and our dogs would prefer to be with us than not. I love the UWS but there isn’t a grumpier place on earth
Your dog belongs on the outside of the cafe barriers. Your dog wants to be with you and vice versa, others do not want to be with your dog. And you never know when your dog could snap or bite, and you don’t want to be responsible for that. I say that as a dog owner.
