Simon and Garfunkel played a famous concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park on September 19, 1981. There were reportedly at least 500,000 people there. The set list is here.
Luckily, someone posted the whole concert to YouTube and you can watch it below:
i was there. great fun, densely packed crowd. now, at my age, my clearest memory is how difficult it was to get to a bathroom! we sat just north of the middle of the crowd and the nearest porta-potties were at the north east corner. it took 20 minutes just to get there.
32 years!
i remember the cool purple t shirts.
great memories
It was a magnificent night and a wonderful concert. No one need a “special” ticket. It was a “free” concert.
I’m 32 years old…this is my favorite album of all time.
Only eight years earlier in 1973, Carole King filled the park with a similar free date. They only use the ramble nowadays, no more concerts in sheep meadow.
