You’ll be hard-pressed to find an Upper West Side resident with a more whirlwind Monday night than the mouse found in Councilmember Gale Brewer’s District Office.
The mouse was captured – trapped – photographed – and transported to the home of multiple wild birds.
“Staff at Office of Councilmember at 563 Columbus Avenue, NY, NY, caught a mouse,” Brewer wrote Monday on the social media platform X. “In a glass jar, we walked it next door to the Wild Bird Fund…for their use as appropriate.”
One person responded online, “please keep us posted,” while another commenter penned, “Imagine getting caught by a much larger animal and then being transported a short distance away to be hunted by a smaller, but still much larger than you creature.”
WSR reached out to Brewer on Tuesday morning to see if she knew the mouse’s fate.
“I do not know what happened to the mouse. I don’t even want to say,” Brewer told the Rag. “I thought it was cute.”
“Nobody wanted to take the mouse home. I thought it was a great idea to bring the mouse to The Wild Bird Fund,” she added. “The Wild Bird Fund is very pro-animal. Yes, you could let the mouse out into the wild onto the street, but it might not live. So I thought, let something good happen to the mouse. A bird could benefit from the mouse. We love the birds.”
The Rag reached out on Tuesday to The Wild Bird Fund in person, over the phone, and through email for more information on what had befallen the mouse, but we have not heard back as of 2:30 p.m.
We will update this story if we learn more.

As a long time admirer and constituent of Gale Brewer, I’d like to mention that my grandson saw a mouse, my assistant and I gently (!) caught the mouse , carried it out and released it under the beautiful Central Park leaves.
A small lesson in urban compassion.
