A sizable amount of money was stolen last month from a Central Park food truck, police announced on Friday.
Around 8 p.m. on June 21, a man snuck up behind a food truck located on East Drive near 85th Street within the park, and snagged an employee’s backpack from the truck, police said. The backpack contained roughly $3,500, according to police.
NYPD released a photo on Friday of the man wanted in connection to the incident.

At least the vendor get’s a tax-writeoff for the loss.

You must be kidding if you think a low paid food truck vendor itemizes on his/her taxes. He or she is simply an employee of the truck company.
Tax write off? You think these people pay taxes?
Yes, if they owe taxes they pay taxes. But in order to deduct anything for the theft they’d need to itemize deductions and it’s unlikely they would reach the threshold where it’s beneficial for them to itemize.
They didn’t make this money so they don’t owe taxes. Like of you get fired today and don’t get a new job before January 1 you don’t owe taxes on all that money you didn’t make.
Even though the money from sales was stolen, it still has to be reported as income. It’s against that income that the theft will be deducted.
Any taxes they might have paid on the cash (probably not much) would be much less than the stolen money itself.
Unless they’re in the 110% tax bracket, yeah.

I am sure they are insured and declare their income.
You can’t declare a cash loss from insurance, because obviously you can’t prove the amount stolen.

It kills me when hard working class folks get robbed by losers who think they’re entitled to someone else’s money rather than earning it themselves.

It kills me too. What also kills me is that a lot of locals immediately jump to the criminal’s defense, saying he probably had a tough life.
They also vote for politicians who don’t want to address this type of crime, sweep it under the rug, and happily report that crime is down, all while pretending they’re working for the people.
The bulk of the crime that’s swept under the rug is white-collar crime. Statistics purportedly showing that crime is down (or up, for that matter) take no account of white-collar crime.

why is there a truck in the park at 85 and east drive? the park does not (normally) allow food trucks, they only technically allow the parks branded food carts.
I worked for a while at 87th and Fifth, and walked home to the UWS from the entrance on 85th. There was almost always an ice cream cart — not a “food truck” — where the entry path intersected with the East Drive. Near the Onassis plantings. This was some years back, but maybe there’s a distinction between wheeled carts and actual motorized trucks?
Food trucks are not allowed inside Central Park. So the first question is – why is a headline that includes the phrase “Central Park Food Truck” now considered a perfectly normal headline and no one thinks anything of it?? (It’s bad enough that food trucks and giant/smelly “street meat” set-ups now dot multiple locations on the *exterior* edge of the park.)
Is there any way to help support the worker whose backpack was stolen? Or the food truck owner, if it was his/her money. That amount of money can mean a lot to someone who is living near the poverty line.

Yes, but supporting the business. If we find out which specific food truck it was, we can spend money there.
Never would have guessed. What employee keeps that much cash? Now, he may have been an employee owner and that would explain some of the understandings above but you would expect the arricle to lable the victim the owner of the entity that owns the business. All the Sherlock Holmes’ reading this ought to collect some more facts.
