At the 6:00 April 21 meeting of the NYC Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America, Samuel Atcherson will provide ways to improve your health literacy. Healthcare can be confusing—especially when it comes to hearing loss. This talk breaks down what “health literacy” really means and why it matters. You’ll learn simple, practical ways to communicate better with your providers, ask the right questions, and make sure you truly understand your care. The goal is to help you feel more confident, prepared, and in control of your health conversations.

Dr. Samuel Atcherson.

Samuel R. Atcherson, PhD, CCC-A, is a professor of audiology and otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and has lived with hearing loss since early childhood. He uses cochlear implants and communicates in spoken English and American Sign Language. His personal and professional experiences have shaped his passion for helping others navigate communication challenges in everyday life and healthcare. His work spans hearing and balance disorders, transparent face masks, patient communication, and improving access to care through better understanding. Sam is an advocate for people with hearing loss and works to make complex health information easier to understand and use.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
