A fire in an apartment on West End Avenue was quickly brought under control at midday on Thursday. West End Avenue was closed in both directions while FDNY units operated at the scene.
The FDNY confirmed that a call was received at 12:02 p.m. for a fire on the 11th floor of 451 West End Avenue between West 81st and 82nd streets. The fire was declared under control at 12:36 p.m. and there were no injuries. The cause remains under investigation.
As is typical for a high-rise building fire, there was a heavy response. The FDNY told West Side Rag that 20 units and 78 fire and EMS personnel were at the scene. Ladder 35 extended its tower on the north side of the building and broken windows were visible on the building’s north and eastern exposures, as engine companies connected to the building’s standpipes below.

I hate high rises! So very scary one unit can wipe out all those families.
Give me a brown stone anytime.

I’m happy no one got hurt.
Another building with long term scaffolding.
20 units really seems excessive. Who lives in that building that they sent so many out?
An automatic response to high rise buildings.
“Seems excessive” – based on what? Your extensive firefighting experience 11 stories from the ground?
Excellent photos!
I am so grateful to our firefighters! They get stuff done and don’t scream.
