Fly Me From the Moon

By Gary B. Martin

While art is subjective, here is NOT what this is an illustration of:

1. Slim Pickens’ rodeo missile ride at the end of “Dr. Strangelove”
2. Me trying to get a closer look at all those drones
3. Bringing presents to those astronauts stranded in space

Happy and Merry Everyone!

Gary B. Martin is an illustrator and animator who has lived on the Upper West Side for over 30 years. His illustrations appear in West Side Rag on Sundays, chronicling life in the neighborhood, New York City, and the Universe. See them all here. As long as those presents don’t clunk someone on the way down (something I always wondered about with Santa’s overburdened sleigh) I say bring on the joy Martoons!

So before I read about the cartoon, I did think it was a takeoff on Doctor Strangelove. So now that I know what it is not, is Santa riding a giant penis? A happy holiday season and a terrific 2025 to all!

Sweet. Made me think of the great 1902 Georges Melies’ film, “A Trip to the Moon.”

Your cartoons this year were a wonderful mix of sweet and sad and angry and frustrated and loving and joyful. But as much as any cartoonist can, your illustrations make us feel something. Thank you.
