Update, Sunday, 11:30 a.m.: The man who died in the fire has been identified as William Green, 78, according to ABC7.

Original Story

A Saturday morning fire at 111 West 71st Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues, took the life of an unidentified man, an NYPD spokesperson told West Side Rag.

Firefighters responded to a call at approximately 7:43 a.m. and found the man “unconscious and unresponsive” in a 10-floor apartment,” the spokesperson told the Rag. “He was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS.”

The building, named Hargrave House, provides subsidized housing for seniors, according to the New York Post.

The Fire Marshal will determine the cause of the blaze, the spokesperson said.

I used to live directly across the street from here and loved watching the seniors sit outside, feed the pigeons, enjoy the weather, and add to the lovely neighborhood vibe of this area. RIP to this man! ❤️
