A Walk Around the Upper West Side the Day After the Election: Locals React

By Carol Tannenhauser

On November 11, 2016, a few days after the first election of Donald Trump to the presidency, West Side Rag took a walk around the neighborhood. The purpose was to gauge reactions of Upper West Siders. The sampling was totally random; the responses were thoughtful, passionate, distraught — and in some cases, hopeful.

On Wednesday, we took that same walk (with a first stop in Central Park with the dog). When we left the park and hit the streets, we even spoke to some of the same people we had eight years ago. Each person we engaged got the same question: “How do you feel about the results of the election?”

To help ensure candor, we asked people to identify themselves by age, but not by name. Streets are also not named. And we did not ask people whom they voted for, though it was usually obvious.

Reactions

November 6, 2024, 6:49 a.m. — Central Park – a group of dog walkers gathered, with others joining in as they passed. Someone laughingly called it “a commiseration party.”

Man, 53

I feel deeply disappointed by my fellow Americans who were so willing to be taken in by this narrative that’s based on fear and falsehood. It’s just sad. And the other emotion I have is anxiety – over what’s going to happen. Because I don’t think he’s going to be surrounded by people of quality. They’re concerned with power and self-promotion, and they don’t have the interests of the country in their minds.

Woman, 40s

It’s a sad morning. I didn’t want to wake up. I thought, “Will this day pass if I just stay in bed?” (she laughs). We’re from the Netherlands and we’re living here temporarily and we were just discussing – are we more safe to stay here or to go back? Because of his foreign policies, we’re probably more at risk in Europe now than here. If Trump’s not going to support NATO or Ukraine, then what is Putin going to do? It’s not like Europe has been investing a lot in defenses, because we were always thinking we’re safe.

Woman, 45

I am unsurprised – and unsurprised at the level to which America hates women. Never underestimate how much America hates women, and how much internalized misogyny among women there is. That’s how I feel.

Man, 43

I feel it’s a very tough one. Trump – I’m not a supporter of him. I hope he does the right things in terms of women in this country. I hope he does the right things in terms of immigration in this country. We’ll have to see.

We left the park and headed west on one of the UWS’s main cross streets. These are some of the people we passed along the way.

Doorman, 62, originally from Cuba

I think the American people made a decision. It’s a free country, right? That’s the good thing about this country. It’s not that way in other countries. We have to wait and see.

Porter, 35, sweeping the lobby behind the doorman

I feel like it was a predictable outcome. A lot of people wanted him to be president again. Everything’s in God’s hands. Let’s see how it goes.

Woman, 76

I feel devastated and afraid. Betrayed by my fellow citizens, as though the original sin of slavery, living through the electoral college, is exacting punishment.

Woman, late 50s

Well, I’m disgusted, frankly, but I was expecting it so I’m not as horrified as most people who were optimistic about Harris. I thought she did not run a very good campaign, and it was a shame they didn’t run a primary.

Woman, 27

Sad, really nervous about what the future holds, just trying to take it a day at a time, I guess. It’s not ideal.

Woman, 20s, in a hurry

Horrible! And I’m late for work!

Man, 50s, wearing a MAGA hat

 I’m happy about the results.

Another man, 50s, wearing a MAGA hat

I’m happy about the results, too.

We stopped to talk with a man and woman sitting at a sidewalk cafe with their dogs.

Woman, 48

Devastating. Shocking.

Man, 52

I’m disappointed in the country, disappointed in our lack of morality to elect someone like him.

Woman Barista, 22

I’m devastated, discouraged. I can’t believe it’s happening again. I’m from south Florida and a lot of people my age were pretty Republican. I think it just depends on what you were surrounded with, your parents. I left.

“How are you feeling about the results of the election?” we yelled to a sanitation man. “I don’t even know. What are they?” he yelled back. “I been working!”

We turned the corner onto Columbus Avenue

Store owner, man, late 20s

I’m happy. I think it was time for a change. After what we went through the last four years…it would just be the same with her. I’m happy for a change again. I think he’s the better of two evils. But I don’t get involved with politics. I’m not losing customers over this. My grandfather, who started the business, never got involved with politics. He used to say, “I don’t see red, I don’t see blue, I see green.”

Store co-owner, man, 40s

I’m very delighted, to tell you the truth. As a black man, I really like what happened, we should have open minds. People have to push us to take care of our families and respect ourselves. That’s what I tell my daughter. Since Roe v. Wade was passed, we have had more abortions.

Store co-owner, 30s

I’m a big Trump supporter, but, unfortunately, being on the UWS I can’t let anybody know that. The society we live in, I can’t have my own opinion – I’d be vilified for it. We had a customer who found out my partner was gonna vote for Trump, and said I’m not coming in here ever again. Because I vote for someone you don’t agree with, you’re not gonna shop in my store? That’s ridiculous. Ridiculous! It doesn’t matter if he’s a good person. Can he run the country? I don’t care what he does personally. All I care about is if he does a good job. People take this way too seriously. It’s not personal. I’m not telling you to be friends with the guy. Can he run the country?

Yes, to some of us, deficits (or more precisely) the national debt has always mattered. A huge budget deficit like we had last year ($1.8 trillion) is horrendous. But the republicans who rightly criticized the deficit and the mounting national debt will very quickly change their tune when it comes time to do a tax bill.

Don’t worry…
Maybe we all came to political because we care what happens to the country and in the world.
We all hate Trump but more than half the country hates themselves and their neighbors.
Its always been that way.
That’s why us New Yorkers don’t live in red states….they are just too negative, uneducated and naïve.

My suggestion to my friends….leave political interests behind and thrive on life.
Shut all political media down . No conversations about politics… We don’t need the stress.

There should be a cable News channel that doesn’t talk about “Trump”👎

I did my undergrad at Yale, and Phd at NYU, and I support Trump. You of course are the only educated and wise one! Everyone who disagrees with you is either stupid, racist or misogynistic, correct? I always seek out people who disagree with me, since I can learn something from them and sometimes change my mind. Why don’t you?

Keep talking down to trump supporters this way and lose more elections—it’s really worked out well for you—lost electoral and popular vote—she spent a billion bucks and got demolished—interesting that the positive interviews here were with the doorman, porter, black business owner and other small business ppl

So you’re suggesting it was “talking down” to Trumpists that prompted them not to vote for Harris? So you’re saying they’re so thin-skinned, so delicate and snowflaky, that they’d opt to coronate THAT PERSON merely because of hurt feelings? An interesting notion, to say the least.

Telling that it is only the men who are happy to have RFK “run wild” over our healthcare, Elon Musk gut the safety net and much more, Vance advance christian nationalism (just to name the newest partners of the trump coalition) on and on and on. (Not to discount the many men who are also devastated)

If you voted Democrat and you are feeling that the election result is truly horrifying, do this one simple thing for your mental health:

Write down your fears of what might happen in the next 4 years on a piece of paper.

Re-read and check in on them every few months.

It will be a constant source of relief to you when you see that your fears will not, in fact, come true.

Then start asking why you had those fears in the first place and how you can prevent them from forming the next time.

I’d happily be wrong in thinking about what Trump will do in the next four years. I’d be thrilled if my concerns (among them cuts to Social Security and Medicare) turned out to be for naught. I’d be thrilled if more and more states ensured women’s reproductive rights and didn’t allow the feds to take over. (It amazes me that few people talk about the hypocrisy of having the Supreme Court overturn row, prompted by Republicans, when the Republicans are all about “no government interference.” Yea, in big business or in the pockets of the rich. But women’s rights, and others? Not so much caring there. And I just love how trump carries on about immigrants. I guess people forget that Melania was an immigrant but she and her parents got easy entry. The average immigrant woman who was a model or whose parents had no job that we know of when they came here. yea, they aren’t welcome. They’re criminals. They’ve been let out of jails. I support legal immigration but I don’t support demonizing immigrants as a whole, no matter where they came from. Given the number of white collar criminals (never prosecuted, who run companies in the ground, strip workers and retirees of earned healthcare and pensions but never held accountable as they march off with golden parachutes) in this country, it sure is Pot. Kettle. Black. No matter the circumstances treating people humanely even as you turn them away is a better choice. And let’s be honest, there are people trying to come here who have superior education and skills. And this also refers to those who came here over decades. I think of the many Cubans who came here and brought tons of experience and skills and others from around the world, many of whom lost their homes, their jobs and took low wage jobs because we didn’t honor their experience. I find it so hypocritical that so many folks who previously immigrated here in better times are looking down on those who are comin in now. Whoa. Let’s talk about elitist, shall we?

Interesting that so many store owners interviewed are happy with the results.

Also interesting that the couple from the Netherlands thinks they are unsafe because the Netherlands has underinvested in defense — which is exactly Trump’s chief complaint with NATO (they are basically getting a free ride on our defense budget).

WaPo, Aug 16, 2024: “The Biden administration has now outpaced the Trump administration in approving permits for drilling on public lands, and the United States is producing more oil than any country ever has.”

Maybe under Trump people won’t go back to sleep for another four years assuming that anything meaningful is being done about the climate crisis?

To the 30 yr old store owner: We have past experience with which to evaluate whether he can run the country. Were you proud of the incredible debt increase? Or shutting the entire country and schools down during Covid? How about the graft and corruption that took place with the pandemic hand outs & loans? Over 1/2 went out of this country. Were you impressed with the non-withdrawal of Afghanistan? Or the minuscule wall that the taxpayer covered? And the healthcare plan that’s been in the works for over 8 yrs now-it’s gonna be beautiful and fabulous once it’s out.

Perhaps you felt confident in his ability to keep top secret documents safe in a bathroom & used as a party teaser? Let’s put our trust in a convicted felon/head of business who duped banks and the IRS who also defamed a woman he sexually assaulted & has shown no remorse or shame (& has not paid his court ordered judgments for either).

I imagine the most important aspect of leadership one must admire is his inaction when an attempted coup of our government occurred for the first time in history which included a call to behead his vice president (while also trying to convince a government official to change votes in Georgia).

This is the person that you have placed your confidence in to lead our nation and you wonder why others are offended? I think the better question is why would they not be.

Right on! The problem at the core is that Americans suffer from chronic amnesia — have a hard time remembering ANYthing that happened before yesterday. Trump’s first term was a nightmare; we lost over a million people from Covid alone. So, with no memory of what actually happened, many are applauding what they think will come, blissfully unaware of what it will be like to live here after Trumps Day One.

As a moderate Democrat (who is routinely called a Republican here despite always voting D and hating Trump), I would like to tell my far left, AOC-loving neighbors, to step back and try to learn something from this election. Leave NYC occasionally. Listen to the rest of America when they say an issue is important to them, even if you think (likely correctly) that they are ridiculous. We all thought that they were nuts for obsessing over migrants. They probably were, but Biden did nothing about it for a few years then finally tried – too little, too late.

Look at your wish list of priorities and think about how they will play out in a MAGA ad. Stop holding Democratic candidates to litmus tests that will hurt the party nationally. Because moderate candidates are a lot closer to what you want than the MAGA candidates who will easily beat your preferred far left candidate.

I’m not saying that you should do a 180 and become MAGA. Nor should you set aside your good intentions to help the less fortunate. But be more aware.

To Store owner Co-owner, 30s:Maybe it’s more than just voting for “a person you don’t agree with”.

I despise trump but the democrats failed to do anything right when it comes to illegal immigration and crime. Also, instead of immediately picking Harris they should have considered the other contenders especially in relation to the inability of so many voters to accept a woman as president. What depresses me most is the fact that half the country thinks trump’s lack of civility is acceptable. What a terrible example this sets for the younger generation,. I saw images of small kids in the Midwest wearing fjb tee shirts and was sickened by the lack of respect.

I agree with your comment but I don’t think there was a realistic option besides Harris by the time Biden dropped out as there were only a few months left before the election. If Biden had announced in 2022 that he would not seek re-election (as some people were hoping), I think Tuesday’s results could have gone very differently.

If they had run anyone who was not on the original ticket, I believe they lose the donation money. But nothing does NOT say democracy then annointing candidates rather then running a fair and open primary. This is all about a certain ircle of politicians who have massive control issues and couldn’t let the process actually happen fairly. But you have to ask why they want to retain such control? What is it they feel they have to control? Insider trading? Money? …

Kamala may have been their sacrificial lamb – they knew they would have a hard go of it and didn’t want to waste Newsom – Nancy’s nephew…

I will take lack of civility over inability to address illegal immigration and crime. I don’t condone lack of respect some kids are demonstrating by wearing offensive t-shirts but I will take it over the kids committing crime over and over and letting them go.

What depresses me most is the fact that half the country thinks manners are more important than actual issues.

While I don’t necessarily agree with all Democratic priorities, am in complete despair about the Trump win.

And in despair that so many people don’t think character and decency count.

To the store owner…
It would not be ok if I came to the store and let my kid play with and mess up merchandise.
It would not be ok if I came with my dog and let my dog pee in the store.
It would not be ok if I berated or insulted you or your employee because the line was a bit longer than I wanted.

And so on…..

Character is essential

Would it be ok if the store merchandise keeps getting stolen but perpetrators are released and come back for more?

Would it be ok if numerous homeless keep peeing near the store but we keep adding number of the homeless to the neighborhood?

Would it be ok if a store employee removes a thief from the store but gets arrested for assault?

And so on…..

I’m disgusted with the level of misogyny that runs deep in our country, especially among Trump supporters. And what short memories they have. Was he great at running the country? A million deaths from COVID? Tax cuts for the rich? A huge increase in hate crimes? A country on the verge of civil war? The only solaceI find is that his supporters will have to live with the outcomes of an administration run by this cruel, stupid and divisive man.

My question…..will the Democrats FINALLY take a hard look at their role in this, their policies, their narrative and messaging and open up their views who their constituents are? So many, myself included, feel politically homeless these days. Even this whole ridiculous closed primary system in NY. You have to register as a Democrat to have your vote count. We need more common sense moderates to run since I believe that more people are closer to the center.

But despite all this, what was on my mind when I awoke? Composting and the need to push through Congestion Pricing since THAT is the solution to all our problems. Oh, and if the recent building auction on West 86th will become yet another homeless shelter vs. the low income housing this neighborhood desperately needs but never seems to get built.

Who do you think all these owners of $5m+ condos vote for? Even if they write their checks to Gale’s staunch progressive black tie fundraisers.

Imagine being Kamala and losing to an opponent with this much baggage? But easier to blame it on skin color and gender vs. take ownership of where she may have run an inferior campaign. The hubris has to go and the Dems need to take a hard honest look at the voters in this country. Enough with divisive politics where everyone is a victim.

feelings are natural, but the answer isn’t “take the day off if your candidate lost.” The answer should be, come to school and let’s have a civil discussion about why, what your concerns are, how do we move forward and how do we work together to make things better.
I’m sorry, but we have created a society where it’s ok to demean and cancel people you don’t agree with; where it’s fine for students to shout out a speaker they don’t agree with; where it’s my way or no way at all. There is almost no discourse anymore and it’s frightening.

It’s clear from the happy voters interviewed that they don’t truly understand what they voted for. If you are a happy voter today, or even an unhappy one, may I suggest you have a gander at historian Heather Cox Richardson’s clear-eyed substack on the issue? We need to understand what happened and to steel ourselves for what’s coming.

I’m sad about the results, but at least they were conclusive, so we are spared the usual kvetching about the Electoral College. I do think us Democrats have to learn that much of the U.S. fears the far left more than the far right. I have a friend who was considering voting for Trump because, in his job at an arts organization, he is strongly encouraged to list his pronouns after his name, in printed materials. That really upsets him, despite his progressive creds. The Democrats have to get rid of some of the more offensive attributes of wokeness. It’s still possible to support progressive causes.

Since everyone was so into defending our democracy I think everyone should enjoy the massive display of democracy with 75 million votes and house and Senate majorities—the people have spoken!

The aftermath/Post Elections–
It’s always been the more educated people in the cities ……. less educated make for chaotic judgment.
It’s pretty important you take care of yourself and your mental state. All this will pass.
There will be tremendous resistance….. that resistance will slow Republicans down……don’t think for one minute they are actually capable and supporters of democrats and Independents are just disappearing.
The whole movement is morphed into a fighting machine .
Take away insurance right to abortion etc..believe it won’t happen.
But the insiders are all in to enrich themselves…..
Greed will take over.

Dems aren’t the ones who sent a mob to storm the capitol, promised to be a dictator on day one, or told Christians they “wouldn’t have to vote anymore.”

This was an election determining whether or how much of our democracy we are going to keep, and the country elected literally THE ONE PRESIDENT who has problems accepting the peaceful transfer of power.

There are plenty of Republicans with the same beliefs on immigration who would accept a peaceful transfer of power. Any of them would have been a good choice.

The statistics are interesting to me – men, even more men with no college voted for Trump. Fewer women voted for Trump, but within that more non college educated women voted for him. Latino men voted for him.

I do not understand how they believe that a convicted felon, who is a misogynist, regularly rude, known liar, dictator loving candidate will do more for them than Harris.

This was a vote for change from people with no memory who are afraid of immigrants, and unhappy with their high grocery bills who believe that the job needs to be done by a tough bully of a man.

Sad, I believe she would have been a terrific leader.

Immigration leads to lower wages and higher housing costs. All concerns for most people in this country, and certainly a concern for many Latino and African American men. Professor Donald Harris, the father of VP Kamala Harris, wrote an article many years ago that immigration was a huge negative for the low income communities, particularly African American community. This is why in my opinion, so many low income voters supported President Trump. Immigrants lower their wages and raise their housing costs, so why vote for someone who want to reduce your wages and increase housing costs?

Don’t come crying when more of your rights are taken away..when the comstitution is no more..
when no one will take the jobs immigrants do..when women are more degraded..dont come crying to me. I can understand the other side in terms of grocery prices. wanting to afford a home etc but to discounst character in a person leading a country is sinful. Offer more opportunity to the masses so they can be enlightened and partake in the so called American dream ..It starts with education and ends there too..Its a shame what children have to hear when we raise them to have respect for all people and listen to different views. What comes out of a presidents mouth should be honorable..shame ..shame.

I’m from a very rural area, and moved to Manhattan for my job, so I’ve been exposed to the views on both sides quite a bit. I’m a woman with a business degree. And I voted for Trump. I liked what Nikki Haley said: policy over personality. I also disagree that someone like Trump was able to get a fair felony trial in a very blue city so that wasn’t really a factor for me

What policy? All I heard was generalized talk. We have beautiful plans. 8 Years and still no healthcare plan, the one he said would be in place on day 1 of his first term. So, really, what policies?

My biggest fear has already been realized: Donald Trump will never be held accountable for his high crimes against the United States: overturning the 2020 election and the documents case.
He’ll probably get a slap on the wrist from Judge Merchan in NY despite his threats during the trial. And the Georgia case will probably be dismissed against him. That in itself demeans democracy and throws law and order out the window.

@ Beth Browde

“ Well gee, parent, which party is responsible for there being more guns than people in this country? For blocking any reasonable controls on access to guns? Who puts targets on the faces of people who disagree with them?”

The tone is unbelievably condescending. You want to bet that the perpetrator wasn’t a legal gun owner? You don’t need Columbia degrees to understand that. Criminals will always find access to guns.

For your information, Beth, I’m not a republican and am very anti-gun. Still “gee”?

Of course the perpetrator wasn’t a legal gun owner. But what makes it so easy for anyone to buy a gun? And yes, gee whiz. I wouldn’t vote for a man who is hoping to gut all regulations if my goal is to make us all safer.

Please! Stop calling “Trump” a president!!!!! he’s not !!!! And never was and never will be!

I really don’t wanna hear that name again. I have blocked all my Cable News Channels that talk about him.
And I do recommend everyone else do the same and get off the subject and move on with your life. I’m sure there’s far better things for “all” of us to do then talk about that knucklehead🤡.
No more social media and cable News shows for the next four years. No high blood pressure or stress…..PLEASE‼️

Also – the “he’s not the president” is the same garbage the republicans screamed 4 years and the democrats were all over anyone who said that and here we are saying the same thing. As I said earlier – we all need to look in the mirror.

He’s not the President? That’s really your statement?? I didn’t vote for him but that’s how the process goes. Rather than bury our heads in the sand how about we all start listening to each other, both within our party and across the aisle.

I am amazed at the number of people on social media say that the only reason VP Harris lost was because she was a woman and/or she was black. Sure, I am not dummy and realize that a good portion of the voting population chose Trump for those reasons, but as others on this post have said, I think she was far from the best candidate and, I also think she ran a horrible campaign (maybe no fault of her’s given she had so little time).

I think the Democratic Party needs to look very deep within the party and maybe they will realize they share some of this blame. When Obama was leaving office, they shoved Biden aside so that Clinton could have her chance. As far as I am concerned, she was a very unlikeable candidate who also ran a bad campaign and so, we got Trump Part I. Then it was ok to bring out Biden when there could have been younger candidates that could have beaten Trump. I think Biden won that election, not because he was the best candidate, but the country was in the grips of COVID and saw some really awful things from Trump. Lastly, they forced Biden out of the race way too late which left the party with an imperfect candidate. Also, take a look at some of the more local candidates. The Republican Party has younger, more dynamic candidates (I won’t say smarter….) while the Democratic Party keeps running out the same has beens over and over again.

If the Democratic Party doesn’t figure out why Trump made significant inroads into the Latino and Black communities, if they continue to not listen to the messages from the people that are in front of their face about pressing issues for them (how may times was Harris asked how she would differ from Biden’s economic plans to have her say literally nothing) then the same results will keep happening.
