A 64-year-old man was killed by a fire Thursday night at 850 Columbus Avenue, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) apartment building within the Frederick Douglass Houses, near 103rd Street, an FDNY spokesperson told West Side Rag.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the blaze and were taken to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital, along with the critically injured man who later died there, according to the spokesperson.
The fire was reported at 9:16 p.m., and elicited a response from about 20 units and 78 fire and EMS personnel. The blaze was found on the top floor of the nine-story building. It was extinguished by 9:57 p.m.
“The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by fire marshals,” the FDNY spokesperson said.

Terrible, so sorry to hear. We hope the firefighters will make a full recovery.
Heard on NPR radio that it might have been or was due to a lithium bike battery
