Man Robbed At Gunpoint in Central Park: Police

By Gus Saltonstall

A man was robbed at gunpoint late Thursday night in Central Park, a police spokesperson told West Side Rag.

A 27-year-old man was in the park around 11:30 p.m. near East Drive and 102nd Street, when he was approached by three people, police said. One of the three men flashed a gun, and the trio then forcibly removed cash, a cell phone, a bookbag, and an electric bike from the victim, before running away on foot, NYPD added.

The police spokesperson said that all three suspects appeared to be 18 to 20 years old, and wore dark colored hoodies.

The 27-year-old was not injured during the robbery, NYPD said.

There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.

Again – the criminals have zero fear. Because there are zero consequences if caught.

Not to victim blame, but being alone in the park at 11:30 pm is not smart. It is sad that this is the case, but it unfortunately is.

“Defend yourself”? Law-abiding citizens are not allowed, and do not carry, guns in this city. What are you bringing to the gun fight, rolled up newspaper?

Criminals, on the other hand,…

Better that way. They’re all empty-suited panders with nothing to offer. The talking points include “need to work as a community” (read: noone’s really working, and the “community” part dilutes any and all responsibility) and “need more services and programs” (read: give us more money to spend and steal, without accountability for results).

To Leon and im10ashus and anyone else who is going to blame the victim for being in the park after dark, here are some other places and times when it is dangerous to be out (based on a quick scan of the most recent violent crimes reported by WSR):

Central Park at 3pm on a Wednesday
72nd St at 2pm on a Friday
66th St at 7pm on a Friday
62nd St at 8pm on a Tuesday
72nd St subway at 3pm on a Friday
81st St at 1pm on a Monday

I’ve not lived here as long as some on this site, but I’ve lived here long enough (20 years) to know that it used to be safe to go to the park during opening hours (i.e. 6am – 1am), even after dark, and that it used to be safe to ride the subway without seeing open drug use and worrying about being randomly slashed or shoved.

The fact that things were significantly worse in the 70s and 80s does not mean that we should be ok with the very obvious decline which we are seeing in safety and quality of life.

Your first point is very simplistic. Yes, you can get attacked at any time. But it is more likely to get attacked late at night. You shouldn’t be a shut-in to avoid all risks. But you can easily minimize risk by avoiding certain activities.

The rest of your argument actually makes sense.

True but to mitigate my risk factor I would not be crossin g the park at 102 street at that time

This! I was ‘got’ at 7pm in a very popular area of the park this spring. I’ve noticed since then a clear uptick in these CP mugging stories and happenings. Things have definitely gotten worse over the last few months.

Victim blaming is far different than suggesting prudence.

Remember when this was “the city that never sleeps?” Now everything is shuttered by 11pm and you risk your safety if you go out after that. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

I am so suspect of the increase in crime in Central Park. I am not accusing anyone yet since we don’t have facts and information. Just wondering if the influx of migrants are involved. We’ll find out.

The increase in CP crime came before Texas started shipping migrants here.

A valid point. Which, unfortunately, is diametrically in opposition to the priorities of the Republican party, which many posters here want to be in power.

2 young adult males were arrested in CP today (Monday) at 5:15 PM. There were 6-8 police vehicles (4+ wheels) which came from different directions blocking the west drive just north of The Tavern exit.

I did not stop for any details.
