A man was stabbed randomly on the Upper West Side early Friday morning, a police spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag.
A 29-year-old man was walking to his car around 2:50 a.m. at the corner of Columbus Avenue and West 84th Street, when a man approached him and stabbed him in the stomach, police said.
The attacker then fled the scene, police added.
The New York Post reported that the Upper West Side stabbing on Friday took place at Amsterdam Avenue and West 87th Street, but the NYPD spokesperson reiterated the Columbus and 84th Street address. The Rag will update the address, if necessary.
There have been no arrests.

It’s ok, Alvin got the real bad guy, Trump.
I’m still trying to figure out what the crime was. An affair with a hooker?
Fat Alvin is a dangerous tool. Vote for whomever you want. But getting rid of the candidates you don’t like with bonkers legal action is very bad.
Well thank god the jury figured it out. Try reading the transcripts of the trial which are publicly available. And no, it wasn’t about having sex with a porn star (not a hooker) which he laughably denied to the end.
But you probably said it was about sex with an intern when Bill Clinton was under the microscope.
The crime was falsifying business records, no?
the crime was falsifying business records with the intent to cover up another crime. the underlying crime was not reporting the $130,000 campaign contribution. The hush money was in effect a campaign contribution, as it potentially, and probably actually, altered the outcome of the election.
For those of you who are so enamored with Trump, let’s recall how overwhelmingly stupid he was in this case. All he had to do was admit he paid the $130,00 0 in hush money, and say he did it because he didn’t want his wife to know about the affair. That would have been legal: a lie, but very hard to prove it was a lie. Instead, he went out of his way to convict himself.
Don’t blame Alvin Bragg, who prosecuted brilliantly. Blame your political hero, Donald Trump. But crooks and con men are never as smart as their followers believe.
Thank god for that! LOCK HIM UP!
Yes…he put us in grave danger by mischaracterizing bookkeeping debits.
You can buy all the Donny spin that you want, but prosecuting white collar criminals has nothing to do with prosecuting other criminals. ALL criminals need to be prosecuted, especially con men who lie to get into office, and then when they are there, lie to you more. But please send Donny money! Then, when he spends your money on something other than what he suckered you for, you can cry into your soup. Oh, and another thing — the case was not about bookkeeping. He lied about that, too.
Exactly my point! I’m not concerned about Hush Money, I’m concerned about the crime wave hitting my city. Hope people wake up!!!
The case was not about hush money. It was about business fraud, and the jury heard both sides, heard and saw all the evidence, and determined he was guilty on all 34 counts. That has nothing to do with this case. Funny, but I want all cases to be prosecuted, no just the cases YOUR interested in!
Crime wave , go to a red state, ohh I forgot red states all have worse crime and lower life expectancy. bye
I would guess that at least a bit of the dysfunction we’ve seen in recent years is encouraged by the example of the most powerful person in the world’s constant glorying in breaking laws, rules, and social norms.
One can walk and chew gum at the same time
But sadly, they don’t. Bragg has accomplished what he ran on. Now, maybe he can start protecting the citizens of the City from the real criminals who put our very lives danger.
It would seem that this cannot be done in NYC.
Assuming the stabber gets caught, he’ll most likely will be out on the street within a few days.
Braggs cares more about getting Orange than getting the ones spilling red on the streets.
I think part of Bragg’s thing is commitment to the goal of “dismantling the carceral state,” though maybe he’s toned that down some since he took office.
I can hear the victim blaming now, “he should not have been out at 3:15am.”
There are nurses, MTA workers, bartenders, waitresses, etc who are going home then and they can’t feel safe any longer. 10 years ago I wouldn’t have a worry as a woman coming home at 1am, ever. Now, I stand in the middle of the subway platform eyeing the left and right of me to make sure no one comes near me at 8pm at night.
Never felt so unsafe in 25 years living here. Thanks NYC and NY STATE legislators of the last 10 years. Thanks for ruining our city.
Any evidence to support that? Watching Fox ,reading the Post and citizen app notifications aren’t evidence
I’m a Dem. I despise the outlets you mention. But I totally agree. There are many more mentally unstable people walking the streets and in the subways. Perhaps you don’t get out much.
I wish the far left people who are in constant denial about the crime issues would stop assuming that those who are alarmed are MAGA. We are not. We are moderate, logical Democrats. We are a lot closer to you than most of the country. Perhaps you can leave your little UWS bubble and enter reality world. You are almost as dangerous as MAGA.
I asked for evidence you chose to name call . I literally take the train every single day. Ill wait for your evidence that NYC is dangerous compared to almost any big city. It’s actually remarkable to me that we live the way we do packed together in subways and streets, rich and poor, and there is so little crime Data shows red states have far more crime per capita, and life expectancy is 15 to 20 years shorter!
One thing we can agree on is that we have more mentally ill people on the streets not getting care than any other country I’ve visited. its pretty clear to me why. It’s because no resources are allocated . The only time I hear GOP talking about treating mental illness is when someone kills a bunch of children with a machine gun and THEN they talk about mental illness , only as a distraction from a conversation about guns. They will never spend money to help people ever. Their precious donors might have to pay taxes.
The Republican party is about to implode . Their Presidential candidate is a CONVICTED FELON and hopefully their toxicity will be purged from our society forever.
You may feel more unsafe now but if you have lived here for 25 years, the city was objectively far less safe back then. Look up crime stats for yourself, they are easily available. Perhaps the reason you don’t feel safe is the fact that you have constantly updated instant access whenever serious crimes occur, almost real time thru internet outlets like WSR.
I don’t care about any crime stats as it is a completely different bar now. Reported crimes and felonies have all changed from even 8 years ago so it’s a joke to look at crime stats now. It is apples to oranges in this state. I speak from what I see with my own two eyes and what I personally feel every day as a woman when I’m on a narrow platform and a deranged man or woman starts to approach me. And this man in the article unfortunately suffered from one of them in our neighborhood. Real enough for you?
You are entitled to feel what you feel. But the facts are facts however, and the fact that you feel data on crime reporting has issues does not make crime stats invalid. See https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/24/what-the-data-says-about-crime-in-the-us/ As one example. Many people feel the same way you do, despite the hard numbers. Perhaps we all felt more invincible when we were younger, as an elderly person I know i did.
@Bill, more than one thing can be a crime, hope that helps.
But resources are limited. Time and resources devoted to this can be redirected to the issues that actually affect our lives.
This prosecution costs $2 million and a significant amount of resources that could have been used otherwise for violent felonies.
Resources are limited because of many things, like all the millionaires not paying their fair share of taxes, and then too, our major paying his buddies
Wait until all the millionaires leave NY and the tax base implodes. Then you’ll realize how much those millionaires actually pay in taxes. The fair share argument is sophomoric when the stats indicate what a high percentage of taxes are paid by a small percentage of millionaires. But keep parroting that fair share argument.
Does any state in the Union have involuntary commitment to psychiatric (or whatever term of art we need) facilities as we used to have in NYS? The idea of releasing potentially violent mental patients “to the community” seems to be either a failure or to be such a minimal success that I think it should be abandoned.
If the perp is caught, I am guessing that we’ll hear that this person has priors and that some of them involved violence or threat of violence.
I forgot who it is – Hochul and/or Adams – recently stated that there are increased efforts to commit those who are very clearly out of their minds. There is a medical professional and a police officer working together to do this.
The whole thing makes a lot of sense – there are plenty of very obvious cases out there. And as I have said repeatedly, this is for their own good – letting them rot away in the streets is not protecting their liberties – this is a win-win.
Adding: I just read an article from 1994 on Larry Hogue, so-called wild man of 96th Street. All the same stuff going on still with crazed homeless people – and Hogue was also a crack addict. Some advocates for the mentally ill are quoted in the article as saying that 1) it’s too expensive to remand involuntarily to psych institutions, and 2) it violates the rights of the mentally ill, and other residents are wrong to be unsettled by mentally ill homeless people living on the street in their neighborhood.
as to 1), the article said (30 yrs ago) it was four times as expensive to remand to a residential facility than to manage the mentally ill person “in the community.” But does that figure count for the costs to the city of the crimes committed by homeless or untreated mentally ill persons? The more unchecked mayhem, the more people are motivated to move out, etc etc. To say nothing of the costs of violence and thievery.
Please more cops, more cameras, more arrests and holding on the UWS.
I’m not sure what were the ‘good old days’ people refer to when discussing the history of crime. In 1960, when ai was 8, I was walking on Amsterdam Ave. And was shot in the neck by a BB gun. I had to go to St Luke’s. It missed my spine by about an inch. In elementary school we were warned about the local street gangs
2 years later I had a gun put to my head as I witnessed an armed robbery in the lobby of my building. In 1966, I had a gun pulled out on me and robbed in Riverside Park on a beautiful sunny afternoon
In 1981 while training for the NY marathon, I was attacked at 3 in the afternoon in Central Park by 2 guys who wanted my Walkman who put a knife to my throat
In 1985, a Trinity school teacher was shot walking to school at 8 am by 2 kids hired by her husband to kill her. I saw that first hand.
In the 90’s there were so many crack dealers on 92nd and Amsterdam the the police ran a stake out from my apartment building
I can go on with other examples. The point is it was never totally safe. One has to always be aware of one’s surroundings. Crime ebbs and flows
Stop with the romanticism of ‘days gone by we’re safer’. It is a total myth !!
Well how is the guy, any update on his condition.
I don’t know if this is the case with this particular crime, but we see a lot of crimes being committed by what the judicial system calls “Not Guilty By Reason of Insanity” and often we see the perpetrator walk. Or at the most spend a few nights to a month in some sort of Mental Illness Facility.
Why do they not charge with “Guilty By Reason of Insanity?” Then put them in a facility for the same amount of time a sane perpetrator serves.
Although, even those criminals get off easy in NY.
You should look at the statistics for NGRI… what you are saying is false…. NGRI cases constitute a tiny majority (nationally less than 1%) and about 80% of people found NGRI do receive psychiatric treatment.
It sounds like some readers are suggesting there should be a moratorium on all non-violent felonies until the crime rate approaches zero…. or does that just apply to Trump….
Oh boy! Another attack in the city!
…… The tourists ain’t gonna like to hear that. !
Comparing a violent crime to Trump’s is a comparison without distinction.Trump falsified business and tax records in order to circumvent an election. It’s very sad that citizens don’t think this is a serious crime and that some people should be above the law. Trump’s crime, of course, is unrelated to the horrible stabbing described in the article. We’ve all heard about too many of these random acts of violence and many of us feel this problem is not being addressed in an effective manner. However, both white collar and violent criminals all have to be caught and face justice no matter who they are.
Unfortunately, the law is not applied equally. It’s obvious to most objective people that this is political and not about upholding the law, no matter how much the media “pundits” claim it is.
Cool, lets disregard the fact that DA Bragg has prosecuted this exact crime 100s of times and Michaeal Cohen did time for it.
Do you “life long democrat” “objective” person feel the same way about
Taking home our country’s top secrets?
Fomenting an insurrection?
Illegally attempting to overturn an election ?
Sexually assaulting E Jean Caroll?
Felony Tax Fraud?
Civil Fraud?
Defrauding students at Trump University?
These are only things hes been indicted for, convicted of, or admitted to.
Do you believe he’s innocent?
Do you believe he actually won 2020?
And do you think its all political or just the Bragg case?
Im genuinely curious and wont name call no matter what your answer is
You say you’re a lifelong Dem are you still? and what changed you?
Im happy to have a respectful conversation if you want.
Given that Trump was president, how will any trial not be called political?
Why can’t it be both about upholding the law and also have political ramifications?
well said!!!!
That’s only if you believe that the revelation of a porn star would have swayed the electorate. There was plenty out there already concerning Trump’s behavior…once one is drenched, can they get wetter? Ironically, Trump lost anyway, so who is the injured party and what harm did they suffer?
Actually DJT won in 2016 the election involved in this case and most likely will win in 2024.
If we get what we deserve I would like to not get him.
DJT has done a great deal of harm and will do far worse from the Oval Office again.
Hear, hear!
Without further investigation, how can it be said that the attack was “random”?
when i was growing up in this hood in the 80s and 90s I would feel scared about crime based on the number of times I was mugged. Now my sense of safety is based on crime stats and media reports that I read which are very glum but I don’t ever get mugged. There’s a lot of visible mental health, addiction, homelessness and the friggin scooters and closed stores so it’s a blight out there but that’s not the same as being a victim.
I felt the same way until the past few years as I’ve witnessed an increase in mental illness in public spaces and had to occasionally run away or hide.
Last week I was almost punched in the face by an unhoused man while walking down a busy 72nd Street on a weekday morning. We were walking in opposite directions giving each other plenty of space and minding our own business. He became enraged when he dropped his lighter on the ground and it bounced in my direction. He charged at me , yelling and swinging his fists. I dodged and ran into the street. I was never so grateful for double parked cars to hide behind. Two, kind people who witnessed the event checked on me.
I worry about my luck running out or my kids walking home from school.
A lot on here about Trump. Not directly relevant to this person’s being stabbed by someone I suppose is mentally ill roaming around with a knife.
I despair of any changes. But I think we need a change in how violent perps are treated. Societies in the past didn’t let them just continue to wander around, attacking people. A community legitimately expects responsibilities of those living in it as well as accords those people rights. What we see now amounts to “we give you rights to do what you want, and we don’t demand you live up to responsibilities.”
This is not just and it is crazy.
BTW the answer is NOT to be run by Republicans. Red state crime surpasses blue state crime in many ways.
Why are people talking about Trump and this blog that has nothing to do with him!
What’s with you UWS people and enough this turd Trump👎
Why do we have to read and hear that name?
I have blocked all my cable NEWS channels.👎
So boring!
Can’t we talk about something more interesting then this political BS !
