Why the Rag Went Down on Tuesday Afternoon

By Carol Tannenhauser

It was a few minutes before noon on Tuesday and I was preparing to send out the daily email newsletter from West Side Rag to you and 22,179 other subscribers. As I always do, I took a deep breath and prayed that nothing would go wrong. Nothing ever had … until Tuesday.

When I opened the Rag’s email and clicked on a link, a strange page appeared — and it did so on every other link I clicked. I immediately contacted our tech person who told me a lot of technical things, but the bottom line, as best as I could understand it, was that a single solitary tech person, located who knows where, wiped out the Rag by pushing a single solitary wrong button.

“The entire site??” I slacked our IT person. She answered the question indirectly. “We are working on restoring it, but it will take a few hours.” “HOURS?”

So there you have it, a layperson’s explanation of why we lost the Rag on Tuesday afternoon, depriving you of a newsletter. We’re sorry if you were expecting one, so today, we’re sending two.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate. Your servers are still having issues. Pages are taking forever to load, and I just got a 504 telling me a page load timed out.

“The entire site??” As a web manager, I felt that in my bones. Glad it’s all up and running again.

Keep up the good work. The newsletter is a great lift to the drudgery of a weekday afternoon. 🙂

Welcome to the Internet Glitch Club!!! We spend hours with various techies, for hubby’s work and then just general Geek Squad maintenance. Thanks so much for a terrific daily UWS read.

I really enjoy reading your newsletter even though I moved from the UWS in 1985. I still feel very connect to The City and visit whenever I can!!! Thank you for such a great newsletter.

That’s really spooky, how an entire website spanning years of journalistic work and community input can just vanish due to the actions of one person’s inattentiveness.

I’m glad it was backed up!

This will happen one day with E-Trade and TD Ameritrade, and eventually Chase ,Wells Fargo and Citi.

AI will learn EVERYTHING. It’s amazing how much we trust a screen. Good luck to us ALL.

Thank you for the update, and glad the site is on the mend! We take it for granted that things work, but the truth is that stuff break, and glitches happen, and all one can do is try to mend what can be mended, let what happened be known (best one can), pick up, clean up, and carry on. Glad to see the newsletter in the inbox. Yesterday’s was an odd one indeed.

No! Slack is an internal communication system we use.
