By Gus Saltonstall

Matt Schick peered out of his window Sunday evening on 87th Street and Amsterdam Avenue and was met with an unexpected sight.

A green parakeet with a yellow head.

Schick spent the better part of the next hour trying to lure the bird inside, both through his window and down on the sidewalk.

Schick was not able to corral the bird, but “fortunately, another resident at 85th Street and Amsterdam found the same bird around 8:30 p.m. and was able to safely capture it,” he told West Side Rag.

Photos of the green parakeet have been posted on multiple Upper West Side social media pages, but the rightful owner has not stepped forward yet.

If you know anything about the bird, please email info@westsiderag.com.

Poor ‘keet! Will the finders keep him/her if no owner is found?

Maybe this little bird is not a westsider? Could it have flown (or blown) across town or up or downtown? Can someone consider eastside social media?

Birds fly! (Doh) He may have come from anywhere in the city. Get the sweetie a proper (large) cage and either adopt it or find it a good home. It’s so darn cute and seems to be very well adjusted.

I am an experienced parakeet rescuer and have contacted WSR via email to let them know I can provide a cage immediately as I live nearby. The bird can also be taken to the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine at 562 Columbus Ave between 87th/88th. He looks very well taken care of and in good health.

There’s a bunch of parakeets living here in Central Park, There’s a flock of them when you enter the park at W. 81st St. taking the path to the left to the top of the hill. They come and go sometime I don’t see them for days.

Are parakeets able to survive this cold weather? I hope so.

That part of the beak is called the “cere.” In females, it is brown, and in juveniles, it is lavender or lilac.

I vaguely remember awhile back that someone may have lost their parakeet in Central Park or the Upper West Side. Not sure if I’m remembering correctly. Hopefully the person sees the flyers.

No doubt an asylum seeker from south America looking for a shelter or a hotel room.

Originally, budgerigars (“budgies”) were from Australia.

That budgie is definitely a boy. He looks very aware and personable. They LOVE celery stalks (if sliced the long way)… keep the leaves on the stalk. They also love sliced oranges and it’s leafs. They also love hibiscus leafs. They will watch the leaves for a day and then nibble on them. Beet leafs on its stems is another huge favorite.

Hello! My own bird recently passed away and I’m heart broken. It’s be my absolute pleasure to adopt this beauty and take care of him permanently or at least until it’s true owner comes forward.
Please let me know if this is at all possible.
