Jesus Rivas-Figueroa, 15, who was living at the Stratford Arms migrant shelter on West 70th Street, was indicted Monday afternoon for attempted murder of a police officer and a tourist, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced.
Rivas-Figueroa was also indicted on attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The charges and indictment stem from a shooting in February when Rivas-Figueroa shot at police officers and security guards, wounding a tourist while trying to rob merchandise from a JD Sports store in Times Square, according to police and the DA.
“This shooting occurred in the middle of a crowded Times Square teeming with New Yorkers and tourists,” Bragg said in a news release. “This defendant is charged with allegedly recklessly firing his weapon inside of a store – striking a tourist – and then turning the gun on a police officer who was courageously attempting to place him under arrest.”
The shooting happened after a store employee confronted Rivas-Figueroa and others about the stolen merchandise, which prompted the teenager to pull out a gun and fire it at the employee, the DA said. A bullet narrowly missed the employee, but struck a 38-year-old woman visiting from Brazil in the leg, according to the DA.
She survived, but needed emergency treatment at Bellevue Hospital, police said.
Store employees called police as Rivas-Figueroa fled the store, and two nearby NYPD officers attempted to chase him down, the DA said. The 15-year-old continued to run and turned around to fire but miss a shot at the officers, the DA added.
The teenager was found and arrested a day later hiding at a house in Yonkers, police said.

It’s nice to see how NYC is being enriched by all these hardworking and productive migrants.
The local ordinance preventing the NYPD from working with ICE must be repealed. If you are here illegally for whatever reason and you can’t abide by our laws then you should be arrested and deported.
Under your plan, if you’re an undocumented migrant and the VICTIM of a crime, or a witness to a crime, you can’t go to the NYPD. Because they’ll turn you over to ICE. What your proposed policy does is enable criminals and predators to exploit and victimize migrants, i.e., increase the amount of crime in the City.
There is a work around for undocumented victims and witnesses. It’s called a U Visa which grants them temporary status.
Congratulations on falling for one of the biggest canards in immigration discussions. It is very easy to differentiate between people who are victims of, crime or witnesses of crime and criminals. Victims and witnesses can easily be exempted from ICE detainers as long as they are not guilty of crimes other than their illegal immigration status.
A bit silly isn’t it? They have it easier than the people who commit crimes and are here legally
Why isn’t this criminal on a plane back to Venezuela?
Because he’ll be back before you know it. Current policy is to let him serve out his full sentence here, THEN deport.
So we still subsidize him living in this country but only this time he’s in jail. Not to mention wasting time in the court system…
Why don’t we take a walk down memory lane and see how WSR was covering migrant crisis throughout the year? Anyone else feeling duped and used?

Yes, our politicians and media kept forcing the idea of how wonderful and long-suffering these migrants are. All of them. And we owe them somehow. Didn’t buy it even then but no dissident voices were allowed.
Great digest, thank you!
I would like to add that our schools are overcrowded with migrant children who are given a priority. Local children has been on wait lists for years. Someone from the commenting sections, apparently without any school children or experience in the matter, plainly called it a lie. That’s the world we live in now. Make believe.
Dana,
Was wondering – which schools are the most impacted currently?
The same way that NY city was declared a sanctuary city, the same way it can get rid of being a sanctuary city.
It does not bring anything positive to the city and to its tax paying citizens.
It came about wanting to help homeless US citizens.
Now it has become the heavy weight around our necks.
Get rid of NY city being a sanctuary.
Pronto!
Elections have consequences.
