This year, West Side Rag published over 1,100 articles, including news, events, openings and closings, local politics, human interest, transportation updates, small business profiles, essays, poetry, UWS history, and more.
We could not have done this without the talented team of freelance and staff writers and editors who have contributed their time, talent and ideas. We also relied heavily on community members who took the time to send us tips, photos, and content for our stories. You have also provided nearly 23,000 comments to our articles this year, exchanging ideas with each other and with us at the Rag.
This coming year will undoubtedly be full of controversy, with upcoming elections, wars raging, protests, immigration issues, and the like. With your help we will continue to focus on the issues relevant to the Upper West Side, and hopefully balance some of the turmoil with the splendors of our neighborhood.
Thank you and best wishes for a happy, healthy, peaceful, and productive 2024. As our newsboy says, “We’re in this together.”

Thank you for being a pillar of the neighborhood, team. Happy New Year!
I <3 the Rag. Thank you to the whole team. Keep on doing what you do best. Here's to a great 2024.
Hou’oli Makahiki Hou!!!! Happy New Year to the West Side Rag and staff!!! Thank you for covering the neighborhood so well!!!!
Thank you – Happy, healthy, and wonderful New Year to everyone in the neighbourhood. Some time ago I lived a half year in UWS and purposely left a little bit of my heart there. Can’t wait to reclaim it. Such a creative; inspirational and friendly neighbourhood.
Thank you Carol for keeping an eagle eye on everything in the neighborhood ! I moved from the UES to B’way and 72nd in 2013 and it suddenly felt like home. During Covid I rarely went outside so it was great to hear about what other people and you kept us up to date on everything that was happening. Happy New Year to you and your family and all of the other staff members at the WSR!
Thank you, WSR Team!!
It is readers who owe WSR gratitude for a wonderful year of news eliciting interest, smiles and concern. A job beautifully done. Thank you!
We rely on the West Side Rag to keep us informed about our distinct and wonderful part of the city. Thank you for keeping us up to date on it all.
Thanks to WSR for being a must-read blog that keeps me informed of all the UWS news that’s fit to post! 🎊
I really enjoy reading the WSR. Sometimes I like reading the comments as much as the articles. They range from the very informative to the grumpy political. In the latter vein, since I have not seen her name crop up in these’re comments, let me just write the name of Gail Brewer. I imagine we will see her name in many comments in 2024, mostly as the supposed cause of all that is bad. Second only to Gail Brewer, I predict we will see the name of Alvin Bragg, who single-handedly has allegedly been responsible for all the crime on the West Side. Remember: you read it here first in 2024. Happy new year to all. Let’s hope it will be better than 2023.
Thank you all for your hard work making us all more aware of what’s happening around us. Bravo for such great work!
We appreciate your concern & hard work for this community; without you it would be very difficult to know what’s happening on the UWS.
Much thanks to the staff!
May we all have a happy, healthy new year.
Thank you to the entire team, and a very Happy New Year! As a recent transplant to UWS (from Singapore!), I find the WSR an invaluable source of local information and tidbits. I look forward to your regular updates, and thanks to you, I purchased one of Robert Beck’s paintings!
I read the WSR every single day and pass along all the news I read to my friends. I love having a local paper. Thank you for your commitment and beautiful work. Happy New Year.
I have really enjoyed the WSR as a new resident of the UWS, who moved here almost a year ago in February (2023). The articles are very informative, well-written and easy to read. Thanks for what you do! Wishing you and your writers a Happy and prosperous New Year!
Thank you all for all the information and photos and heartfelt messages from some of the UWS neighbors.
Yes, thank you!
Thank you for all of your hard work bringing us news about the UWS. You have been a big part of my life for over 40 years.
As we say with a tad of pride, “The west is best,” and the “West Side Rag” adds to that accolade! Living in this joyful and diverse with a bit of everything and more neighborhood is enhanced by what we read in the WSR. It’s my go-to source of information for the ‘hood! Thank you, dear WSR Rag and Happy New Year to all who live in this glorious place!
Right back at you! I’m grateful to Carol and the WSR team for keeping an eagle eyed focus on everything of importance in our little piece of the world. Here’s to another year of great reporting.
Thank you Carol for the informative articles….. love to read the Westside news even though I’m an eastsider.
I’ve been a proud and happy resident of the UWS for more than 40 years and count the West Side Rag as one of our neighborhood gems. 🙂 Thank you very much to Carol Tannenhauser and the rest of the WSR staff for all that you do! The quality, pride, care and professionalism in your journalism shine through.
So much negativity nowadays. While WSR does touch on heavy and important subjects, it’s also refreshing to read about the bright and positive happenings in our community, Thank you and God Bless.
