A Year-End Message of Gratitude to the Upper West Side Community and West Side Rag Team

This year, West Side Rag published over 1,100 articles, including news, events, openings and closings, local politics, human interest, transportation updates, small business profiles, essays, poetry, UWS history, and more.

We could not have done this without the talented team of freelance and staff writers and editors who have contributed their time, talent and ideas. We also relied heavily on community members who took the time to send us tips, photos, and content for our stories. You have also provided nearly 23,000 comments to our articles this year, exchanging ideas with each other and with us at the Rag.

This coming year will undoubtedly be full of controversy, with upcoming elections, wars raging, protests, immigration issues, and the like. With your help we will continue to focus on the issues relevant to the Upper West Side, and hopefully balance some of the turmoil with the splendors of our neighborhood.

Thank you and best wishes for a happy, healthy, peaceful, and productive 2024. As our newsboy says, “We’re in this together.”

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate. Thank you – Happy, healthy, and wonderful New Year to everyone in the neighbourhood. Some time ago I lived a half year in UWS and purposely left a little bit of my heart there. Can’t wait to reclaim it. Such a creative; inspirational and friendly neighbourhood.

Thank you Carol for keeping an eagle eye on everything in the neighborhood ! I moved from the UES to B’way and 72nd in 2013 and it suddenly felt like home. During Covid I rarely went outside so it was great to hear about what other people and you kept us up to date on everything that was happening. Happy New Year to you and your family and all of the other staff members at the WSR!

I really enjoy reading the WSR. Sometimes I like reading the comments as much as the articles. They range from the very informative to the grumpy political. In the latter vein, since I have not seen her name crop up in these’re comments, let me just write the name of Gail Brewer. I imagine we will see her name in many comments in 2024, mostly as the supposed cause of all that is bad. Second only to Gail Brewer, I predict we will see the name of Alvin Bragg, who single-handedly has allegedly been responsible for all the crime on the West Side. Remember: you read it here first in 2024. Happy new year to all. Let’s hope it will be better than 2023.

We appreciate your concern & hard work for this community; without you it would be very difficult to know what’s happening on the UWS.
Much thanks to the staff!
May we all have a happy, healthy new year.

Thank you to the entire team, and a very Happy New Year! As a recent transplant to UWS (from Singapore!), I find the WSR an invaluable source of local information and tidbits. I look forward to your regular updates, and thanks to you, I purchased one of Robert Beck’s paintings!

As we say with a tad of pride, “The west is best,” and the “West Side Rag” adds to that accolade! Living in this joyful and diverse with a bit of everything and more neighborhood is enhanced by what we read in the WSR. It’s my go-to source of information for the ‘hood! Thank you, dear WSR Rag and Happy New Year to all who live in this glorious place!

So much negativity nowadays. While WSR does touch on heavy and important subjects, it’s also refreshing to read about the bright and positive happenings in our community, Thank you and God Bless.
