Man Stabbed Twice On Broadway: NYPD

October 16, 2023 | 8:46 AM
in CRIME, NEWS

By Gus Saltonstall

A man was stabbed twice Sunday night on the Upper West Side, a police spokesperson confirmed to the West Side Rag.

A 23-year-old man was stabbed in his left forearm and stomach shortly after 8 p.m. on Broadway between West 63rd and 64th streets, police said.

He was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he is expected to survive, police said.

There have been no arrests, police added.

The stabbing took place on a busy Upper West Side block, near Bar Boulud, The Smith, and the West Side YMCA. The attack also occurred a couple of days after a 19-year-old man was stabbed Friday night near Amsterdam Avenue and West 103rd Street, police said.

It is unclear what led up to the Sunday night stabbing. The investigation remains ongoing.

Hope he will be OK.

Wondering why he was not taken to Mt. Sinai/Roosevelt which is just a few blocks away?

I worked at Mount Sinai before the Continuum merger and Mount Sinai doesn’t like trauma centers. They’re expensive and messy and they keep you up all night. Sinai doesn’t think of itself as that kind of hospital.

Thanks for that info about trauma level centers. Same thing happened to me a few years ago and I always wondered about that.

Mt. Sinai/Morningside is a Level 2 Trauma Center, whereas Mt. Sinai/Roosevelt is not a trauma center.

Wish this hospital admins would change the names of the places entirely . I find the whole thing confusing … They should keep it simple and stop mish-mashing the names after all these mergers . Not like life and death are on the line or anything !

So Mt. Sinai/St. Luke’s/Morningside is the only trauma center on the West Side?

And DOT closes Amsterdam for brunch and bicycles “open streets”?

Unbelievable

That was my first thought too. Mt Sinai Roosevelt is a lot closer.

I don’t think mental illness or fighting relates to the voting practices of unrelated people.

Mental illness or fighting don’t relate to the voting practices. The consequences caused by fighting by mentally ill or criminals are surely the result of the voting practices.

It is your right to vote D, but don’t deny that recent changes under progressives sent our city to the abyss.

Except that we are not at the abyss, and the people who eliminated funding for caring for mentally ill criminals were not democrats. And bail reform is only a small part of the crime problem.

Except that in the same time that these recent changes by progressives happened, the same crime increases were seen nationwide in both Democrat run cities and Republican run cities. But that doesn’t back your talking points, so let’s ignore that little fact.

As I write this comment there is a man passed out in front of my building on central park west with a used needle next to him. He has been there since last night. Building staff called 311 and 911 several times and were told there’s nothing to be done.

Peter, you must somehow find it psychically satisfying to leave a hyperbolic comment like this, but you’re doing no one any favors with it — least of all yourself.

Sure, that will help. They current representatives are the ones that have allowed this to go on with providing needles and centers to do drugs “safely”. There is no incentive to stop doing drugs.

My God, how bad does this have to get? Day after day people randomly attacked on our streets, our home! It is awful. The excuses of “well it’s bad everywhere” or ” you should’ve lived here in the 1970’s” aren’t cutting it. This is now. This is where we live and work. It is horrible and it is scary. I really hope my fellow residents take action at the polls. This has to end. now!

We moved upstate during covid but still have our apt on the UWS. We come back in the Winter and I’m dreading it. Up here there is no crime, you can park in front of your house and do the laundry in your house. Its cleaner, quieter & healthier. I’ve had my fill of fancy restaurants and B’Way plays. A few more years to retire and we’ll sell the NYC place. After 40 years in living in the city we’ve had enough. I think with the new WFH policies many people who live in cities are thinking the same.

Great. I hope you’ll be selling your apartment for a deal to someone who will appreciate living here, or give up your rent controlled apartment! There are people who need your apartment so the space is welcomed. Enjoy your endless car rides and walk-in closets! I hope they keep you as entertained as the endless restaurants and Broadway shows do here.

Your sarcasm is not appreciated. The OP doesn’t say they don’t appreciate what the city has to offer in terms of culture. Of course we, NYC residents, love our theatres, museums, you name it.

The fact that some of us have to give it up because of the crime increase and quality of life decrease is very sad. The city is losing valuable members but welcomes individuals who have nothing to offer to society.

Loupie I cannot blame you. We all must do what we feel is best for ourselves and our families, However, in my heart I believe we can beat this. We can turn this neighborhood around. I feel like our love of this neighborhood and this city is bigger than the problems at hand. All that it takes is a commitment to change the status quo. To move out of our comfort zone and put people in charge that will take action. Don’t look at party affiliation, just look at the individual. New Yorkers are better than this. Since when do we roll over and just take $#!%? We don’t. It’s not in our DNA.

The New Yorkers you’re talking about are long gone. This is the new woke ‘progressive’ NYC. The DA, city council and state legislature are never going to pivot to a pro enforcement philosophy. In fact they’re going to keep going the opposite way.

This is where I live and it’s terrifying. When I took the subway this morning at Columbus Circle, there were three people asleep in three different locations on the subway floor and bench in my entrance. This all has to end.

Do you see any relationship between your voting Democrat and the crime that surrounds you?

Nope, don’t see any connection. Statistics all show that crime rose at a similar rate across the country, both in Democrat run cities and in Republican run cities. The crime rate rose across the country while a Republican was president. And criminologists, the people who actually study this stuff, have said that there is not a correlation between party in control and crime. But again, facts stand in the way of what people believe, so facts are ignored. Remember the whole thing about “alternative facts?”

Jtown,
Actual lifelong West Sider here, not rich.

Nope – not OK to have people sleeping on the street, on floor at subway stations etc. Or people openly using drugs.
I see it every day and in various parts of Manhattan.

And it is worse now than when I was growing up here….

What is this with all the sarcastic comments? They don’t help anyone. Any normal person would be shocked by the homeless sleeping everywhere, and not necessarily because it offends their delicate senses. It is because the situation is out of control, no proper medical help or services are provided for these people. The only thing we have is countless shelters that only help to line their operators’ pockets and do not help the homeless in any meaningful way.

Regarding the related issue of visible drug use; people passed out on sidewalks/on building steps/in subways; emotionally disturbed walking around and/or menacing….

I grew up in Manhattan and always had to be mindful and careful.

But it does seem worse now – because now the above is everywhere.
When I was growing up, I knew what streets and areas to avoid.

But always knew that places like the Upper East Side or Greenwich Village or Rockefeller Center etc were reliably safe.
That is no longer the case.

There were never homeless people on buses – but there are now.

Etc
