Ferret on the Loose!

Photograph by Shelley Goldberg.

You can’t say the Rag isn’t ferreting out the news! Reader Shelley Goldberg sent us the following bulletin.

“I walked out of Time Warner after shopping at Whole Foods and almost collided with it. Then about 30 people including me were taking pics and following it. It walked alongside the entire front of the mall, then darted under a cop car. Some animal-loving woman tried to lure it back but it crossed the road and ended up in Columbus Circle. The woman and a guard from Time Warner (on his phone alerting security) threw a coat over it but it ran out from under. By this point, the crowd grew and I left!  No owner showed up. You never know!!”

Of course, I immediately went here:

Q: “Will ferrets eat rats?

A: Ferrets can also eat whole prey including:

Rats”

I think instead of trying to catch the ferret, we should rather say:

GO, BABY!

We should rite laudatory poems about ferrets, hold a ticker tape parade, something!

We need all the help we can get.

My son was there and witnessed the ferret eventually get rescued by the heroic Time Warner building guard, who was able to coax the frightened ferret into a Whole Foods basket. Shortly thereafter, the ferret’s father, a young man ran across the street and explained that the ferret’s leash had broken off of their stroller and they had gotten loose.. He was very grateful for the group effort. It was a very happy ending to a harrowing ferret rescue mission!

Wonderful news, Ellen. I am so happy to hear that the ferret and the owner reunited. I too am an animal lover but felt there might be danger in an attempted rescue if the ferret had rabies. Thanks for following up!! My photo was far from sharp as these guys run fast!

Ellen, thank you for the follow up. As an animal lover, I’m relieved to hear a beloved pet made it home safe. Sounds like quite a scene!

Ferrets as well as many other animals are actually illegal to keep as pets in NYC. Perhaps this one was just visiting.

Yes. It was my father who made the original ruling.

If they are treated as disposable beings, like guinea pigs, that’s a wonderful thing. Little creatures bought on a whim without a species mate and then neglected. Please encourage our city council to pass the bill ‘INTRO 4’ banning the sale of guinea pigs in NYC pet stores.

But some people are very attached to them. A former tenant acquired a ferret and when she learned it was illegal in NYC, she broke her lease and moved to Jersey City!

Yuk ferrets are rodent-attracting vermin, not to mention illegal as pets. I hope it and its “father” have departed the city.

Ferrets do not attract rodents. Quite the opposite. Ferrets are natural predators of rodents. Because of that, rats and mice learn to recognize the smell of ferrets and try to stay away.
