“Why do we allow cars here, ever?”
Because it’s a street. And streets exist to get people and things from one place to another. That was their purpose when they were mapped in 1811, well before the car was invented. And from that day forward, people used the streets to get things and people around, some for hire and some with their personal horses. And in the day of the horse and streetcar? The streets were more dangerous than they are now and pollution (in the form of manure) was worse.
And yes, Virginia, as long as a street is open, buses and trucks and taxis and other for hire vehicles will use it, and if that’s happening then sorry, chalk art and juggling will have to be done elsewhere.
Isn’t the better question “why do the anti-car advocates focus their ire on cars, as opposed to other forms of transport that everyone understands will not – indeed can not – be eliminated; and which will necessitate the continued use of streets for the purpose which streets were created?
“Streets exist to get people and things from one place to another.” I couldn’t agree more. My question is why we dedicate two lanes of every street for parking instead of bike or bus lanes that would actually move people from one place to another?
“as long as a street is open, buses and trucks and taxis and other for hire vehicles will use it”
Yes that’s why they had to close it.
It’s one thing to close an avenue for a weekend afternoon and quite another to question why that a street should ever be open to cars.
Thank you, Paul. Well said, well argued.
As we know incredibly hot day…. and some unfortunate folks were searching for the bus – which of course is not running on Columbus due to “open streets”
Who would ever thought NYC would sacrific core mass tranit for entertainment, especially on a street one block from Central Park and near other small parks, playgrounds
Thank you lin.
I love how peaceful Columbus ave is without all the noise and pollution from all the cars and trucks
central park too is peaceful, go there, no pollution and noise, all for you
It’s not quiet from 77th and north, with traffic and horn-honking from all the soon-to-be-diverted cars.
Is the noise pollution really materially different from the status quo? Maybe we should extend open streets further up next year!
This city needs cars, Manhattan is the nucleus of a large metro area. It’s not a feudal manor as much as progressives want it to be.
78% of Manhattan residents disagree with your statement. No vote needed.

I know right, facts always get in the way.
