The Ukraine war and refugee crisis conjure memories that are tragically familiar this Yom HaShoah. For over 70 years, we have vowed: “never again.”

Join the Shalom Hartman Institute for a transformational commemoration and conference on Yom HaShoah. We will look back in remembrance. And we will interrogate the complex moral issues presented by the war in Ukraine to inspire a Torah of action.

How does Jewish memory compel us to take moral responsibility during humanitarian disasters? In an age of Jewish strength, how do we hold the conflicting tension of our power today with our powerlessness in the past? What are North American Jewry and Israel’s unique responsibilities to welcome refugees in light of the Holocaust?

Conference | April 28 | In person at UJA Federation NY and Virtual | 9 AM – 5 PM ET

KEYNOTE: NEVER AGAIN, REVISITED
YEHUDA KURTZER
How do we confront the feeling of not knowing how to act? After decades of fearing that we would forget the horrors of our recent past, is it possible that we remember all too well – but feel powerless to act on its lessons?

ACTIVATING AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN CRISIS ABIGAIL POGREBIN, TAL BECKER, ELANA BROITMAN, MARK HETFIELD
This panel conversation will move us toward action. How should North American and Israeli Jewish leaders activate memory during times of crisis? Abigail Pogrebin moderates a conversation with Elana Broitman (JFNA) Mark Hetfield (HIAS), and Hartman Fellow Tal Becker.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
