Upper West Sider Christian Jeffers, 48, was arraigned Friday on multiple felony assault and hate crime charges connected to a hammer attack on a 29-year-old Asian man who was standing on the 2 train platform at 14th Street Tuesday evening, according to an NYPD spokesperson and public court records. Jeffers most recently resided at 741 Columbus Avenue [97th Street], NYPD said. The Post reported Jeffers has been held on $300,000 bail in the subway case.

Court records show Jeffers was also arrested and charged with multiple felony robbery counts in a shoplifting incident that turned violent on February 11th at the 2864 Broadway Duane Reade [111th Street]. Jeffers allegedly threw multiple frozen treats into a bag before allegedly attacking a 21-year-old female employee who tried to stop the theft, NYPD said. At the Friday arraignment, Jeffers received $40,000 bail in connection with that incident, according to The Post.

Jeffers is next due in court on March 15th.

Joy, the accused identifies as a transgender woman, according to the articles you linked. Why are you using male pronouns for her?

That might not have been in the police report.

I don’t think they have a LinkedIn profile. Mug shots are not providing placeholders for pronouns. Something to work towards.

Only on UWS will people quibble about gender when it comes to a dangerous assailant. You can’t be serious right? This was sarcasm yes?

Transgender rights have no bearing when it comes to violent human beings. He’s a thug. She’s a thug. They are thugs. Happy now?

      Period. The end. Next apologist?

Such concern for a hammer wielding maniac. Pardon me for not caring what they identify as. They can identify as a cat, I would simply call them a dangerous maniac. Pronoun being irrelevant.

Redirect your shade and concern against the attempted murderer, not a journalist, please.

You may be right, but it is odd that that is your only response to this. How about “Hooray! Hopefully the streets will be safer without this person (regardless of their gender) in our midst!” And if they need mental health help, hopefully it will be offered in the place where they are incarcerated.

Excellent reading comprehension. Clearly the proper use of gender pronouns is the most important point of the story.

You were not distracted by the suspect’s 56 prior arrests or the perp’s parole status. You were also able to avoid the temptation of being distracted by the unprovoked hammer attack on the Asian victim. Nor did you stumble down the dead end of the escalating number of anti-Asian hate crimes in the city.

A++ You caught the possible (we actually don’t know the criminals preferred pronouns do we?) misuse of gender pronouns. Bravo, or Brava. You pick.

Thank you Joy for rephrasing parts of the story.
The overwhelmingly most important part of this story is the crime, and concern for the victims, no question. But there is so much hate against LGBTQ people there’s no need to add to it.
I wouldn’t have mentioned the issue myself because I’m mostly concerned about the victims but it adds a touch more civility to the world to address details like these.

Yes, immense undeniable hate for Asian Americans. When you can’t even leave your front door without fear or anxiety because of thugs like this.

He doesn’t deserve the respect for correct pronouns until he learns to respect others by not hitting them with a hammer.

Author used no pronouns, but should that really be the main focus? Jeffers cracked a man’s head with a hammer, unprovoked, attacked Duane Reade staff on 111 and Broadway, and resides on 97th Street, the center of shelters and supportive housing in the neighborhood and an area sorely lacking in basic safety.

    47 prior arrests.
Why was this criminal on the streets?

Exactly. If you have been found guilty 47 times, you should not be on the streets. I don’t care how minor the offenses were. It seems to me like the system does not factor in the number of times someone has committed crimes when determining sentencing. This should be really easy to fix. I can’t see any reasonable person opposing it.

“47 prior arrests” is not the same as “47 convictions.”

Note that this guy appears to have been out on bail on the prior attack (?). Shows once again that setting bail simply doesn’t function to prevent future crimes.

Wow, my eyes hurt from rolling so hard. This person should be deciding which pronouns he/she/whatever would like to use from prison. I’m a little disappointed that the author even bothered to make that edit. This weird new culture of sympathy for criminals instead of victims is terrifying

If you can’t see how respecting someone’s gender identity is different from condoning their crimes or scorning their victims, that’s your problem.

Joy addressed the question I raised. That shouldn’t stop you or anyone else from commenting on other aspects of the story — including how heinous the crimes alleged are, which ought to be self-evident.

When will the decent citizens of NYC be sick of this failed social experiment. It was meant to use other methods instead of jail but it seems they are getting rid of the jailed part without implementing the other part. Releasing someone after an assault back onto the streets into the same environment does not do justice to anyone

This horrific thug needs to be taken off the streets for good – attacking someone with a hammer? Imagine if you’d been the victim? Prior charges? My god, when will this madness end? I am a law abiding citizen – what the hell happened to MY rights to NOT be attacked by these sickos just because I want to go through my day.

No doubt he was “disadvantaged”. The ability of some people to deflect responsibility is staggering! And in the name of “social justice”, society suffers…pretty ironic.

“When Jeffers was nabbed around 2 p.m. Wednesday at the 125th Street 4/5/6 station, she threatened an officer, “By the time I get out of prison, first thing I’m going to do is get a gun and try to kill as many of you as possible,” according to a criminal complaint.”
