Man Who Had Recently Visited Manhattan Convention Tests Positive for Omicron Variant

A Minnesota man who had recently attended a convention at the Javits Center has tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid-19, raising the likelihood that the variant is already present in the city.

The World Health Organization has designated Omicron a “variant of concern” whose mutations could impact how quickly it spreads or how well vaccines protect against it. The Minnesota Department of Public Health released info about the case:

“The person with the Omicron variant is an adult male, is a resident of Hennepin County, and had been vaccinated. The person developed mild symptoms on Nov. 22 and sought COVID-19 testing on Nov. 24. The person’s symptoms have resolved.  The person spoke with MDH case investigators and reported traveling to New York City and attended the Anime NYC 2021 convention at the Javits Center from Nov. 19-21. The person was advised to isolate from others. Minnesota epidemiologists will continue to investigate in collaboration with New York City and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

Mayor de Blasio recently advised people to wear masks indoors given the uncertainties about this variant.

If you’re not vaccinated (and boosted, if eligible), you’re risking not only your own health, but that of others. Best time to get the shot was as soon as you could, second best time is right now.
