At our November 2 meeting Sagar Savla, senior product manager for Google’s Artificial Intelligence Research Team, will describe major features in Google products that are useful for the Hard of Hearing and Deaf, including apps such as Live Transcribe, a phone app that captions live conversations. His presentation will be followed by a Q&A period. Mr. Savla’s interest in captioning originated in his desire to find ways to help his grandmother communicate as her hearing loss progressed.

Originally from Bombay, India, he has given talks in over 20 countries on topics like Ethical Hacking, Artificial Intelligence and Javascript. He has won multiple awards for his work in tech competitions. He earned a master’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology for his research in the fields of machine learning, user experience and privacy policies. Prior to this, he worked at Facebook on data science and virtual reality; on the best dispatch system at Lyft; and on fraud detection at PayPal.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
