A 19-year-old man playing basketball near 64th Street and Amsterdam Avenue was shot in the left arm around 8:50 p.m. Monday evening, an NYPD spokesperson told WSR. He was transported to Mt. Sinai West Hospital and is expected to recover, said NYPD.  Police had no further information on suspects, the weapon used or whether the victim was the intended target of the gunfire, saying only that the investigation is continuing.

According to NBC 4, the victim was participating in an annual community basketball tournament at the Samuel N. Bennerson 2nd Playground inside the Amsterdam Houses, a NYCHA housing development. Interviewed at the scene, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said the incident was especially troubling to the volunteer coach who told her he’d “never had this problem” and organizes the event to “keep young people occupied.”  Brewer noted that she’d attended for the past 20 or so years.
