GET FASTER WITH AGE- NOT SLOWER!
I have been training men and women over the age of 50 for 25 years and I could tell you one of the biggest fears is slowing down with age. I still hear people of this age group say “Well I’m not 25 anymore, so I’m not expected to move as fast as when I was younger.”
Unless you have a severe orthopedic or neurological issue, the statement above is very much an excuse. INACTIVITY has been shown to be a major contributor to aging faster- NOT age itself.
If you’re inactive at any age you’ll lose muscle and strength, but as you get older the loss of muscle tissue accelerates, especially after the sixth decade of life. The good news is studies show you can get STRONGER at any age, and if you’re strong you should be able to still move fast if you practice moving fast. I will explain as we get further in to the article.
So, in order to move fast and perform activities with speed, you need to be strong first.
WHY STRENGTH TRAIN?
Are you on a regular strength training program? I hope so! Muscle strength declines 30 % on average between the ages of 50-70, but of course, there is a lot of variability depending upon how active you are. And, when I use the word ACTIVE, I don’t mean walking or doing yoga. In order to build muscle and strength, you need to lift weights and gradually be challenged. If you’re lifting weights and at the end of your set there wasn’t much a challenge, you’re not going to build muscle or get stronger.
Bone loss, Sarcopenia (musle loss) and an increased risk for falls and aches and pains are all associated with muscle loss and weakness. Everyday tasks such as lifting boxes, pushing and pulling objects, playing with your kids or grandkids are all affected with the loss of muscle tissue. YOU MUST ALWAYS BE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOVEMENT SKILLS AND STRENGTH, WHICH IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT AS YOU AGE.
DON’T SLOW DOWN WITH AGE- TRAIN FOR POWER!
Power or in laymen’s terms, your ability to do tasks quickly decline at even faster than loss of muscle with advancing age. Studies show that muscle POWER is even more important for many tasks such as stair climbing, rising from a chair or couch and reacting quickly to prevent a fall.
As long as you are strong you can still improve how fast you move. By performing movements fast you’re training your brain to communicate more efficiently with your body. If you practice doing things fast you’ll be prepared when life requires you to move fast. So, when in the gym your tempo for various exercise should be a combination of slow and fast movements. Moving quickly helps your increase power and lifting weights slowly help to build your strength.
Could you get up off a chair or couch quickly? Can you still pick up your feet and jog, run or sprint if you had an emergency or if you were running late and had to move faster? Can you catch yourself when about to fall? If you can’t perform these every day tasks with speed, then it’s time to train for power. Losing your ability to do things quickly as you age could determine if you spend your golden years on the tennis court or golf course or in a nursing home.
Before you attempt to perform any activity or exercise with speed, you should consult with your doctor and then work with a trainer than can show you the exercises that are best suited for you.
