Equinox Reopens, Closes and Reopens Again After Fire Damage

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours on Sunday.

The Equinox gym on Broadway between 91st and 92nd Street was forced by the city and Con Edison to close its doors because of a fire and explosion on Sunday that caused serious damage. A transformer next to the club failed, causing an explosion and fire that forced several buildings in the area to evacuate.

Update: It’s open again, although the basement and locker rooms are closed.

A section of the gym reopened on Wednesday. But on Thursday, Equinox told club members that the entire club would have to close again.

“We apologize for the inconvenience, but we’ve been asked by both the city and Con Edison to close Equinox West 92nd Street.

In the meantime, please continue to visit any of our New York City Clubs. Your membership settings have been updated to allow you to check-in and book classes at any club in New York City during this time.

As always, we are committed to getting the club re-opened as soon as possible for our members and community. We will continue to keep you updated and notify you as soon as we re-open.”

Asked if they might have to close the gym for good, a company rep told West Side Rag that “As always, we are committed to getting the club re-opened as soon as possible for our members and community. We will continue to keep you updated and notify you as soon as we re-open.”

The Club is open; however, there are no showers or locker rooms and no heat.

Anyone who thinks the stuff in their rented permanent lockers is still locked away and safe needs to get to the club. They cut open all the lockers and removed the contents. I was told yesterday they couldn’t find the “bag” with my possessions. I was told to fill out a form and someone would calll me from the club. No one called.

Crud! I specifically called and asked about that and they told me the lockers were still inaccessible, with their contents not moved. Lying jerks. Now I have to go yell at them.

Went in today for a quick spin. The front desk said they hope to be back to normal in about 2 weeks.

The staff is working tirelessly to provide the best experience possible as repairs are made. Given the damage, it is remarkable that the club is open and functioning as well as it is.
