Openings & Closings: Bluestone Lane, Frank Mac’s Pub, New Museum Deli, FunFit Kids, Old Artie’s Space

June 3, 2018 | 1:09 PM
in FOOD, NEWS, OPEN/CLOSED

Pretto, the restaurant on the corner of 80th and Amsterdam, has closed. Bluestone Lane, a chain of cafes and coffee shops that started in Australia, is taking over the space and expects to open in July, writes Andrew, an Upper West Sider and a minor investor in Bluestone. “Bluestone Lane Coffee is influenced from the renowned coffee culture hub of Melbourne Australia, where premium coffee is a way of life,” the website says. The menu tends to include baked goods and heartier breakfast fare along along with lots of healthier items. Click here for the menu at the Upper East Side space (you need to scroll down on the site for the menu).

Frank Mac’s Pub is opening in the former home of McAleer’s at 425 Amsterdam Avenue (80th Street). If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s apparently run by the same family that ran McAleer’s (we had reported about this possibility after a liquor license hearing last year and then promptly forgot about it.) They’re expected to continue serving standard pub fare. They promise to have more info on social media, but it doesn’t appear to be up yet.

The New Museum Deli on Columbus between 77th and 78th closed last week after 11 years. Singh, a manager there, said they lost their lease. “Where will the Computer School kids eat now?” wrote Keith, who sent in the photo.

FunFit Kids expects to open a flagship location at 550 W 110th Street in a 2,700 square foot space in the basement of Congregation Ramath Orah. “It will be a fully functional kids gym with loads of specialty equipment for our multi-sport program,” the owner Danny tells us.

Price Wise Discount on Broadway between 84th and 85th streets got an extension on their lease until September 30, and the owners are actively looking for a new location. Thanks to Sue and others for the tip

The former location of Artie’s Delicatessen at 2290 Broadway between 82nd and 83rd Street is “literally shrouded in mystery” writes Lee, who sent the photo above. Anyone have an idea of what’s going in there?

If you sent a tip and it wasn’t included, it was probably an oversight. Sorry, and please feel free to send or resend tips to westsiderag at gmail dot com.

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was filming an episode in the former Artie’s Deli space.

I think that they might be filming in there. I saw Theatrical lights and I know Mrs. Maisel is filming in the neighborhood.

Arties Deli is still available for lease. The Landlord is speaking with many great restaurants to occupy. In the mean time “Marvelous Mrs Maisel” is being filmed in the great setting. I’m told to watch for new scenes.

They’re filming The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in the old Artie’s space. It was a location used in the first season as well.

Perhaps they are shootng new episodes of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, as they did last summer. Artie’s stood in for the long closed Stage Deli as a place where comedians and agents met over sandwiches. Any UWSer who has not yet seen it might want to check it out.

Wow, psyched about Bluestone Lane! 80th is my block and Pretto and its predecessor were mediocre restaurants – certainly not bad but not interesting. The few times I’ve gone to Bluestone Lane on the east side it was near full. While we have definitely reached peak coffee shop!!, this one seems different enough (kind of a mini Le Pain) that it could make the economics work given all the other competition in the area (Irving Farm, Joe, Da Capo, Joe and the Juice, Blue Bottle, Matto, and of course Starbucks…actually Orwashers has good nitro coffee to fill the hole between Starbucks’ 75th St and 86th St locations…who else did I miss?

I was shocked that Pretto closed so quickly. It was not in anyway mediocre and to dismiss the passing of a very good, long time neighborhood restaurant as that really did it’s history and people a great disservice.

Best iced latte ever! I understand this location will be a “cafe”, with a full menu / table service. If the menu is anything like the UES, the UWS is in for a real treat….delicious and healthy food!

Even I, a coffee fanatic, have to admit that the density of high-end coffee is getting a hit ridiculous, but I’m still really happy to see Bluestone Lane. Their coffee is great, and their avocado toast is delicious too. I have no idea about the rest of their wares, as I have never gotten past those things, but maybe now I will ….

My husband suggested that the deli scenes in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” were filmed at the former location of Artie’s. I’m pretty sure he’s right. So I’m guessing they’re using it again to film the new season.

Three guesses as to what will open in the Artie’s space:
. A branch of a coffee chain headquartered in an obscure suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, where, I am told, premium coffee is a more intense way of life than it is in Melbourne.
. Super-Chop, the newest iteration of a takeout chain based in Cali, Colombia which specializes in salads chopped for a minimum of ten minutes. Target market: people too important and too busy to chew.
. A really big nail salon.

This is only a guess about the former Artie’s location … but could they be filming scenes from Mrs. Maisel”?

Artie’s was shrouded because they were shooting The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon) there.

Thrilled we’re getting a Bluestone Lane in the neighborhood. Best chai in the city!

Yes my fellow West Siders life is built by change. The Museum Deli was the spot for me as the School Nurse
covering the building with a number of schools. Middle School 44 which was phased out. The Computer School
with more than 25 years of stability, The Anderson School newly arrived in 2009 from the PS 9 building, West Prep Academy stayed for two years then moved up to 105th Street taking along multiple problems with the students and a demoralized burned out faculty in my opinion. Finally PS 452 arrived on the second floor adding a new class every year until it became a complete K-5 elementary school. The New Museum Deli
Catered to the kids and faculty at all the schools. The owners stopped selling Red Bull to the kids after I spoke with the manager about the effects of the caffeine on
Middle school kids. The employees loved the kids and always added extra ingredients to the sandwiches for growing teenagers. They tried to “ push the fruit” and sell the yogurt rather than sell sodas. They will be missed!

Agree. The owners and people who worked at this deli were the nicest. They cared for the local neighborhood customers that came in and especially the kids. I remember going in one time and not having enough money—the man behind the register told me no problem…just pay me next time. And of course I did. That sort of neighborhood camaraderie from local businesses is dwindling as everything becomes so corporate. They will certainly be missed.

You need to get out more Scott.

The coffee culture in Australia is amazing and is far superior to anything here – moreover any decent coffee shops here often have Australian or NZ ties.

Well if fake news CNN says it’s true, it must be true. But I’d be suspicious. London, supposedly #1, has rotten coffee. I actually got freeze-dried coffee from a diner there on my last trip.

You’re wrong on that one- Melbourne has the best coffee in the world, and a tremendous concentration of high-end coffee shops. A significant number of Australians are of Italian descent and I guess they’ve spent the last 50 or so years perfecting their coffee.

Just testing whether there is a delay in the posting of comments here. Why do upward of a dozen people all say the same thing: that Artie’s is being used as a set for Mrs. Maisel?

Agreed. If you are going to moderate comments, you should exclude those that are completely redundant. And I believe you have a separate day job but checking and uploading them more often would also make a better reading experience.

But besides that, thank you for running what is generally a great site!

I agree with Cato. Carlos, you’d make a good volunteer moderator (“checking and uploading them more often would also make a better reading experience.”).

Plus, you have the right Moderation principle in “With great power comes great responsibility.”.

I would be happy to but I would also use the power to frequently censor certain posters who post countless times per day, are very repetitive and like to create drama, and I don’t know if management would like that.

With great power comes great responsibility.

I wish the Community Board would put pressure on Artie’s (Landlord) to give back that sidewalk space. Its annoying walking along B’way with crowded sidewalks, especially that one. That particular area gets lots of pedestrian traffic from the Bus stop, Café 82, and Chipotle.
