Lincoln Center Fountain Dyed Yellow By Prankster

Someone tampered with the famous Lincoln Center fountain on Saturday, dying the normally clear water yellow in the early afternoon. In a statement to the Daily News, Lincoln Center said the dye was “water-based.”

“A water based yellow dye was put into the fountain,” Lincoln Center spokeswoman Mary Caraccioli said in a statement. “The fountain is being cleaned. Our security team notified the NYPD.”

Lincoln Center turned off the water afterward.

The fountain should be up and running on Sunday:

They used to use colored lights to get a similar effect in the old fountain. Don’t know if they’ve ever done it with the re-done fountain.

Sorry to hear this. Luckily it wasn’t a dangerous chemical. The fountain is quite beautiful. I hope
this doesn’t happen elsewhere in the city.

“New York salutes” the person who did this?! Speak for yourself. Maybe graffiti is worth saluting also? Any defacing or tampering of private or public property is not amusing. Maybe the writer of the tweets is willing to help clean and flush the fountain, or pay those that do.

“Loosen up”….”that’s what it’s like living in the city”. I hope you funsters are helping to pay for the cleansing. And the fun, irreverent graffiti to follow. 🙂

Yeah Tim – and the UWS-mites should just get-a-life and enjoy the fun. Life is short and things will go on with or with-out you.

Personally, I’d prefer just a touch of blue or purple.

First off, of course it was a water based dye, otherwise it wouldn’t mix with the water. Duh.

Probably something like kool-aid.

Nice going by the pranksters. Hopefully this will encourage Lincoln Center to think about ways to invigorate that plaza rather than just continue watching their average subscriber age continue to climb well past retirement age.

Nice reporting, Julia. I can’t help thinking the fountain’s namesake, Revlon founder Charles Revson, would have enjoyed the use of color.

It would seem cute if it hadn’t occurred the same week that some prank involving young(er) than some–in other words—future opera fans (some seem to think) hurled an unknown yellow fluid at strangers in the street, who seemed not to think it funny.
I mean, come on–wtf kind of security works there? Sheesh.
