An unidentified man’s decomposed body was found in the Central Park Reservoir on Tuesday afternoon near 87th Street on the East side of the park, according to the NYPD.
He was found by a maintenance worker around noon. The man’s body showed no obvious signs of trauma; he may have drowned, police told the New York Post.
2nd body found in the pond near 59th Street and East Drive. I can’t believe there are no cameras in the park?
This the time of year when the water warms up and the bodies float to the surface. A few more will undoubtedly turn up in the local waterways.
Yes, it is “floater” time of year.As temps warm so do bodies of water, giving up their dead from colder previous months. Bodies have turned up in the East and Hudson Rivers as well.
Thus the old saying “Lake Superior seldom gives up her dead”. The water is so cold the required bacteria growth needed to produce the gases which would in turn “float” a corpse, rarely happens.
I always loved that lyric in the Gordon Lightfoot song, but never really thought about the science behind it. Thanks, B.B.!
One, have loved Gordon Lightfoot’s music for years.
If you are truly interested then please read up on Lake Superior and her “reputation”. Even the Indians back in the day knew about the lake’s tendency not to give up her dead.
When divers surveyed wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald decades after she sunk, they found one crew member’s body barely decomposed, fully clothed and wearing a life jacket. Yes, it is just that cold at the bottom of Lake Superior, and it remains a pretty constant temperature.
Good point, but it’s been rather mild for the past month!
